Not at all. People were already rooting for him to begin with and now he got screwed over in this situation (even more if MJF pulled this stunt without telling him). If anything, they run back what they did with Miro and have him destroy everything in his path as payback before taking the TV title from Scorpio Sky.
If not better, at least differently. It’s hard to get someone that’s pushed so big and strong sympathy, and this would be the ultimate sympathy card

I mean didn’t Cesaro let his deal lapse to listen to AEW offer, didn’t get one, and WWE offer dropped as a result? I bet if AEW just releases him, the WWE secret offer drops immediately. There’s no reason for Tony Khan not to grant releases for anyone that wants one. WWE is full and the same guy will be around in a couple years.

He'd need a new great top heel to feud with though. He's super over right now but the only way you can sustain and build from there is continue to give him high level stuff.
You can't expect him to be get the same or bigger reactions over time by just getting screwed (that sympathy pop ain't gonna last long) and not even having the crowing moment he's been built to have for 18+ months.
The problem then is, who can be that other top heel that help Wardlow status and eventually give him the rub MJF might refuse to give him? There's no one who is a heel right now in the company that could do it. It would require people to turn and drop what they are currently doing.

Like I said, you need to turn him and taking him away from his current angle. Do you make him champ, turn heel and Wardlow is the one that beats him? It could work but does AEW have THAT much faith in Wardlow?
