Nintendo basically abandoned the home console market to make a portable you can plug up to your TV. Sony and Microsoft are putting their games on PCs and other platforms. Their sales have been stuck in the combined 170-180 million in total sales range for decades. Console gaming has been stagnant for a while now. All the growth is on other platforms and as companies move towards that growth it shatters the walled garden approach that consoles thrived in.

How is it possible that EVERYBODY missed MS saying since before the X/S launch that they didn't care if people bought the consoles because they were focused on making every internet connected device an "Xbox"? And thats exactly what they've done
things are changing, and everyone will have to evolve to survive. but what's inherent in that is that some of the 'old ways' of doing, and thinking about, all this are "dying"

People will call the Switch a console but at the same time if you add up what the Wii and DS sold combination the Switch struggles to get to what the DS alone sold. The Wii numbers are unaccounted for. They shed 100 million+ in sales.It won’t be long…Nintendo went portable, the demand for gaming PCs are increasing, and PlayStation/Xbox games are on PC. Never say never….
Part of the reason consoles have suffered is the cost. We have an entire generation with on price decreases other than short term sales on holiday pushes.
Consoles will probably never literally die but the way they existed that we knew will die. Console makers themselves admit as much when they sell their software elsewhere. The way it was became unsubstantiate due to lack of growth and ballooning cost.

10 years ago, it was niche to know about 144hz, 1440p, 4k, SSD, ram amounts, CPU clock speeds etc. Now these are commonplace in video game discussions. Steam continues to grow and break new records. Consoles might not ever die but it's not an expanding market.
