Not true. Outside of the US basketball isn't that popular. Same with any American sport.

90% of the NBA is American. You look at boxing, the competitors are from everywhere.

There's a reason why the NBA is more popular than pro boxing is now. And that reason is Jordan.

There are really no factual numbers to support that basketball was more popular during MJ's prime, but I'll just say this: When the Dream Team went to Europe, those guys were getting the same reaction from fans that the Beatles were getting when they traveled.:ohlawd:

You just said you were born in 1990 how da fukk would u know

Tyson already lost his belt and was stumblin around the ring lookin for that mouthpiece before u were born

Tysons prime was late 86-89.He was not more popular than Jordan then or now

Jordan never been as popular as mike.

Basketball - american sport (with some world appeal)

Boxing (at that time) - Tied with soccer as the most watched sport.

I know cause im a boxing fan and any boxing fan with some sense and history knows how big and how popular Tyson was. I might have been born in 1990 but I know the sport

Tyson was on the cover of Sports Illustrated before he even won the title, then he won the title and kept knocking nikkas out he got even bigger.Once he destroyed Michael Spinks he was a virtual sports God at that point.

Even after he got beat by Douglas and went to prison and got out he was still a huge name in the sports. Tyson's first comeback fight after prison against bum ass Peter McNeely grossed $96 million worldwide and did 1.52 million PPV buys and mind you that was against a random no-name bum. That alone should tell you how big Tyson was and that was AFTER he was way past his prime.

let me give u an example young gun,
NOBODY woke up 3' clock in the morning to watch the Mike Tyson - Larry Holmes fight. (it was never on tv also)
But 2 days in a week they were showin' an Nba game live, and usually it was MJ and the Bulls and the ratings was so good, that the nba is STILL playin live on local tv these days, and im talking about crazy hours, 2 through 8 in the morning, while boxing was never aired live on TV.
And i've been around the Europe a lot, so i know about other countries tendencies 2.. Peace

Exactly his NAME is why.People thought kid dynamite/iron mike tyson would return to the ring.

The thread title is who was more famous in their Primes.Jordans prime lasted longer and he was just as infamous as Mike tyson was off the strength of his shoes alone.Tyson was very popular in the late 80's but it was only for a few years his prime ended when buster beat his ass

crazy how I was just browsing this thread :krs:

I only lived in europe a few years, but my parents lived in London during the 80's and early 90s. Mike Tyson was at least 2 tiers(if not more) more popular then Michael Jordan during those years(according to my parents, I actually asked them this a while ago). Michael Jordan was known, but he wasn't cared about nearly to the extent that Tyson was.
