Software is the problem here. The argument that they should be a third party software company because they have historically struggled making software is nonsensical. They have clearly invested in shoring up their software studios. You don’t then prematurely abandon that investment.

This is the biggest quarter ever for software for them and they sold less hardware than they did this time last year when the most popular release was…Power Wash Simulator.

Software ain’t gonna save them at this point. Everything big they have will get more sales on pc or its only being funneled to their already small console installbase, not bringing in new audiences

Hardware is a lagging indicator, they had a terrible 2022. Just like Sony had a terrible ps3 gen but with games hardware eventually caught up. They need to consistently release great games and provide hardware. This was their best quarter ever. Kick the concern trolling

The caveat is sony didn’t release their big ps3 games on pc. It’s not going to be a 1:1 if they aren’t using the same business model.

Sony and Nintendo are still hardware first

Ok, so why are you even arguing with me? That doesn’t disprove anything I’ve said

They’ll make more money releasing their games across multiple platforms than killing their big game sales with xbox console exclusivity as you can see from the data points in the op

They locked Starfield to Xbox Series consoles and didn’t increase hardware sales. All they did was kill sales of Starfield on other platforms, especially when it comes time to put out remasters and ports like bethesda did for skyrim

Same thing could have been argued with Stadia. Why buy exclusivity for this struggling platform, i don’t care if you’re google and have unlimited money, it makes no sense. Lucky for them, they weren’t killing sales of first party games.

This is about them having their own platform and having control over it. They won’t surrender that because of a game even Phil Spencer said upfront wasn’t going to change the dynamics of anything. This is a long game they plan to play. Microsoft is not hard up for cash. They can take the time they need to build a stable of software.

It’s going to take more than a single game for them to turn things around. They need a consistent flow of quality titles. They have more than enough studios to achieve that now.

Microsoft continually making new revenue records. Closing deals, healthy games pipeline. extreme confidence and dedication from their ceo in the success of the brand: Sony stan’s “such a failure they gone close xbox soon”

Sony, having profit problems, bunch of canceled games, games stuck in limbo, Broken games pipeline, new lays offs every week, CEO had to “retire”, Important execs taking their entire team and walking off: Son stan’s “Playstation is killing it:banderas:

We can keep pretending anyone here actually thought hardware sales would DECREASE after Starfield, Diablo Marketing, Forza, Etc. the fact is their games aren’t really moving a needle for the brand. They are still being looked at as Bethesda pc games. The Xbox has a major branding and image problem that isn’t going to be rectified with call of duty on gamepass.

We can revisit this conversation next year when it happens but I guarantee it will be the same one we’re having right now. If anything the fall of Call of Duty sales is going to just be another alarm bell at Microsoft.

This isn’t a year turnaround. It will take the better part of half a decade with the timetable AAA games take to get made.

I get that you want them out of the console space. That’s not what they need to do. They have proven in the past that they can put out successful hardware. They’re investing in the business and haven’t reached a timetable to where that investment is guaranteed to not pay off.

Nadella on Gaming:

- Delighted to close the acquistion of ABK. Will advance their goal of bringing games to everyone on any endpoint.
- Set record of Game Pass hours played this quarter.
- More than 11M players of Starfield. Half of hours were on PC. Most subscribers added to Game Pass in a single day, ever.
- 13 $1B+ franchises now with Candy Crush, Elder Scrolls, etc.
- Strongest holiday quarter ever incoming with MW3, Forza Motorsport, etc.

Amy Hood:
- Revenue up ahead of expectations due to stronger than expected growth in Game Pass subscriptions and first-party content primarily from the Starfield launch.

Relax with the doom and gloom:hhh:
