Could be a number of reasons we aren’t privvy to, for isntance the RRoD in the 360 era most likely ate all their profits

And then the xbox one just didn’t sell well enough in the latter half of its life at all, plus they wasted money with the Kinect. Microsoft just hasn’t been doing well with the xbox division of their company at all.

At the end of the day all we know is sony themselves said their consoles are profitable soon after launch, and microsoft is saying their consoles are never profitable.

Profit off selling actual hardware is always very low or negative.

Profit from selling software and services from said hardware is what they all are chasing.

The profit margins don’t change much cause Sony/Microsoft gotta pay the same people for the same hardware.

In those links @Gizmo_Duck duck posted they are talking about the profit/revenue made by selling software and services not only whats made by the actual sale of hardware.

Profit from selling software and services from said hardware is what they all are chasing.

What i find even more interesting is Microsoft not only admits that they have never made profit off a console but that they are reliant on 3rd party game sales and mtx to turn an eventual profit. Only now they are paying so much money for 3rd parties to put their games on gamepass so they’re not making money on consoles, gamepass, or 3rd party games. Higher revenue and higher spending. There is no point where they can comfortably stop paying 3rd parties for gamepass deals if they want to keep the service attractive. Not only that but add in AAAA 1st party games day one, and where do you recoup?




It explains why they tried to force more people into gamepass ultimate by locking online and f2p gaming behind services, and tried raising the price of xbox live gold by 100%. I think Microsoft knows they are gonna be in a pickle if they dont greatly increase the amount of subscribers of gamepass soon.
