The problem is its not just black youth that does this, and kids having immature dreams isn't whats holding them back.

So by bringing this up she is oversimplifying the issue and blaming the failures of society on kids who are only imitating what society shows them.

No she was not. She was giving kids direct advice on what they should do. It was the same type of shyt many a father, mother, big sis, big bro or teacher give to a kid. She wasn't giving some academic lecture on the root causes of the socioeconomic malaise affecting many black youth.

I get your point, but almost any statement from her or Barack will be viewed as a commentary on the "socioeconomic malaise" affecting the black community. And in my opinion her statements were a little hypocritical seeing how many close ties she and her husband have with "ballers"

Even if it was a general problem why would it be wrong to bring it up specifically to black people, she is talking to college graduates the people who will be influencing society in the future

I think it's wrong to place a race on to something that doesn't pertain to race.

Also I think it's hypocritical of her to make those statements. She herself said if she could be anyone else it would be beyonce, but here she is telling little girls they are wrong for feeling the same way. She is the first lady of the United States and the "baller" lifestyle is appealing to her, why wouldn't kids be drawn to those ideas as well?

so the solution to that is for her to go to white schools and tell them not to be rappers and ballers, the solution isnt to NOT tell black students to not be ballers and rappers

i think its more important to say it to black students because black students dont have the same role models as white kids, i dont agree that the problem is the same everywhere, the breakdown of the family in black communities is worse than in white communities

as for as beyonce, im not even sure what that means, are you saying beyonce is a baller?

No, I'm saying that kids having immature dreams isn't a "problem" in the first place so there is no need to find a solution. And even if it was a problem the solution lies in what society, including herself, glorifies, not telling a bunch of college graduates that kids have bad priorities.

When kids say they want to be a baller or rapper they are saying they want to be like a jay-z or Beyonce like figure. Our first family loves jay-z and beyonce so then how does she turn around and chastise kids for doing the same.

what people dream about becoming and the role models people have is a problem for society, yeah that is where we disagree

the first family "loves" all kinds of people but our first family are also trained lawyers from top universitues, so they are saying be like us, the actions of the first family do not say be ballers and rappers, in fact obama was just distancing himself from jay-z a couple of weeks ago

Only an idiot would look up to jay-z.

He's not even a talented rapper.

Most kids have immature dreams. You line 10 kids up and 9 of them will tell you they want to be something other than a doctor, lawyer, engineer, ect.

I'm willing to bet Barack didn't dream of being president as a kid.

He only had to distance himself because he allowed himself to be so close.

Society promotes ballers and rappers. Turn on TV on almost any channel, even so called "news" channels and fukkery and nonsense is promoted. In my opinion it's a little out of touch to act like kids are creating these ideas on their own.

Man any nikka denying this is true, either doesn't know many black people or live in a sheltered ass place. Way too many nikkas wanna be rappers, ball players, promoters, producers, etc.

Yup I saw that coming up and even now in my mid twenties I see it from my peers.

this isnt really about kids, this is about young adults and grown ass people trying to be ballers and rappers

and even if we take your assessment to be correct that its a general problem then obviously black people who care about black people like michelle should specifically tell black kids not to follow everybody else, by pushing black kids away from ballers and rappers that would give black kids an advantage

but the reality is that your assesment is not correct, what really happens is that kids may have immature dreams but because of a strong family structure and professional people as parents and role models by the time they are adults they would move away from immature dreams, and the opposite happens in the black community, that is why you see people in the black community still pursuing immature dreams even when they are not kids

I'm willing to bet Barack didn't dream of being president as a kid.

well actually according to some reports he actually was

Daily Kos: Clinton uses Obama's kindergarten essay against him (Kindergate?)

but that is neither here nor there, obama's mother had a PhD, having that type of role model and guidance would have pushed away from being a baller

im not sure what this is suppose to mean, Michelle obama was addressing the fact that kids are being pushed to being ballers and rappers, i dont know where you get the notion that she was saying kids are creating it on their own, how do yo get that from her speech? she was addressing college graduates and telling them they need to address the issue
