Good album.
Can understand where people would feel the album as a whole was 'disappointing' given how much of a factor Meth was at the time.
Meth was the Michael Jackson of the Wu. That is how big he was.
But Tical wasn't Off the Wall necessarily.
Wasn't trying to be looking back. Definitely wasn't a commercial album. Gritty as it gets.
Bring the Pain and it's video were bigger than life. Release Yo Delf.
And then the Puffy remix of All I need helped too.
Loved the RZA's remix video version though.
Lyrically, Meth was still more into flow and sing-song mode and riding beats.
Blue Raspberry's soulful vocals.
In retrospect, RZA's production work on this album is underrated
It is the underrated star of the album.
dirty, gritty, and grimy
Other favs:
Title track. So gritty. Sewer music.
Biscuits (RZA's vocal samples on that....)
Bring the Pain
What the Blood clot.
Sub Crazy (RZA was on some sh*t with that one....)
P.L.O. Style
I get my thang in action (underrated gem)
Stimulation
This was Meth's best album as a whole. Lyrically, he got better with his later work. Seemed like he stepped it more consistently with the lyrics running with Red.
What you can say about Tical is that Meth held up the flag. Meth was a star before this album. He could have easily reached for the commercial heights of Snoop or Biggie. But Tical showed Meth stayed true. Kept it Wu. Upheld the Wu brand and its credibility. Showed the crew wasn't a flash in the pan. He kicked off the solo wave. Kept the brand strong where fans were amped to hear what's next from the solo releases. And we certainly weren't disappointed with Return, Cuban Linx, and Liquid Swords.
