Nah.

Just like we said in the thread speaking on Illmatic. Back then, we didn't care how much it sold or any of the other classics. Our focus was just on making sure we had the album. You wanted to be up on everything! That's what being a fan is. Being crazy about the music. Not about how much it sold or whether it's being promoted by the label. We assumed everyone had the album. Years later, when everyone online started talking numbers, we were shocked to see it didn't sell back then. Because we never even cared about that.

No true sports fan is speaking about ratings, lol. You talk about the game and who sucks and who doesn't. ESPN will push useless stats about ratings, but that's their job. But no one watching a game is gonna be there speaking about how well the station is gonna do because the ratings are going to be whatever, lol. That's what they do. Viewers sholdnt be worried about that. But in today's world, there's so much information out there, people have shifted into worrying about things that don’t matter. It's just how it is now. It's mad weird.

Dudes are literally online trying to predict first week numbers for albums now, lol. It's like Erick said, that didn't start until 50 and Kanye did that sales battle.
Agree with everything except the last bit, your buddy Hov started that with that lame "I sold what your whole album sold in my first week" line.

Since then it's become a barometer of buffoonery.

I think this is the issue though.

As fans, and unless someone works at a record label, why would a listener be concerned with gauging an artist's popularity? If YOU like the music, then support it. If you don’t, then don’t. Sales and charting are for the people in the industry. That's the business side of the game. Charts and sales shouldn't be the focus for someone just listening to music. It's like Erick Sermon said recently, "Too many fans today think they're in the industry too and want to talk about first week numbers".

The focus should be more on the music. Not on sales and whether someone is being promoted through whichever channels. Customers are focused on the wrong sh*t, these days.

It's damn near impossible to have a real conversation about girl rap because the topic of streaming and sales supercede everything. Regardless of which fan base started it, the Barbz definitely keep the shyt going because they love throwing the numbers of a 15 year, well established veteran in the face of fans of other girls. Meg, Cardi, Latto, ect shouldn't even be on their minds, they're not even in her area if were speaking about success, and yet, they ALWAYS have to insert Nicki into the conversation when those girls drop music. They still haven't gotten over Cardi coming into the game and dominating her debut, and that was 7 years ago.

It's funny, Nicki should be comparing her numbers to that of Beyoncè, Swift, ect, but it's very clear that she doesn't measure up to them when it comes to that. It feels like she leans on out selling and out streaming the rap girls cause it's easy to justify and argue numbers when in that lane.

Regardless, that's why I don't have discussions about other female rappers with Nicki Minaj fans because I have yet to meet one that doesn't lose all common sense and reasoning when trying to have said discussion. It ALWAYS comes down to numbers, they don't want to get into actual skill and musical ability because they will lose. Their fave ain't really been LIKE THAT in a while.

Actually good numbers for today.

Honestly, only thing people are checking for like that right now are:
Kendrick
Future
Metro
Megan
Sexyy Red (to a lesser extent)

That's it. That's Hip-Hop Royalty as of 2024.

Everyone else is basically on pause until Not Like Us cools off.

I actually like it that way, all these new soundalikes are boring af.

So ..Nicki didn't transcend Hip Hop music years ago? She wasn't extensively collaborating with pop acts trying to appeal as a crossover artist? That never happened?

Interesting. I must be imagining the last 10 years of her career.

Like I said, Nicki's competition isn't and shouldn't be 20-something year olds. Listen to how pathetic that sounds this far into her career. Y'all are taking numbers and throwing them in people's faces every chance you get, trying to prove something that's BEEN proven. Why can't you take that as a compliment?

Y'all have a severe inferiority complex. Every new girl that comes on the scene y'all IMMEDIATELY compare to Nicki and shyt on, for no reason other than feeling threatened. It's comical.

I've made zero excuses for Meg, so go troll with that bullshyt somewhere else. Goofy.

Right? Jay the one who was trying hard to do 1mil first week and dropped multiple bars about doing numers.

"Only one moving units is Em, Pimp Juice, and us"

Record sales ain't this new, revolutionary discussion with fans.

Lol the general public set those standards tryna laugh at my girl whole time these so call new girls can’t even keep up .

Sza a super star and smashing everything .

SZA is truly a rare breed when it comes to new era superstars. I honestly don’t really know how she broke out so big, I mean I see the appeal but not to the point where she’s literally THE face of modern R&B

I was riding with a chick listening to this.

One of the first tracks is basically a porno on wax with a dope trap beat. I didn't get to hear the rest but doesn't she have like Disney sponsorships or something :russ:

I think I would give the credit for sales talk to EPMD. With the "30 days later, the LP went gold" thing.

But even with the sales talk from Jay and them, I still never cared what anything sold. I never heard anyone talking about that, until people started to online after the 50/Kanye thing. The rappers always did it, but the fans weren't doing it back then.
