He never gave us a criteria for this list. Is it highest selling artist of the yr? Most critically acclaimed album of the year? Best verse, best song?

Because Nas 100% should have 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 with his Magic and KD run.
To be KONY you have to be that guy you can’t get KONY off elder statesman albums

Nas KONY years for consideration are 1994, 1996, 2002

these dudes are something else. i know those albums went diamond on the coli, but they made NO impact or noise in the city outside of KD1. and even in 2020, the way you couldnt escape pop smoke anywhere you went outside, he was EASILY the KONY.

You said he’s pulling names out his ass as if he called Kangol Kid from UTFO the KONY of 1987. LL as KONY in 1987 is debatable

And the “he’s driving engagement” argument is tired. And it’s one dimensional nikka shyt. Being controversial for engagement is only good short term but it’s bad long term. No brand who takes themselves seriously would risk that. And that page wouldn’t be what it is if it did cheap tricks like that

He's pulling names out of his ass for the engagement. These list are his most commented post ever. Rakim the man who redefined lyricism wasn't the hottest rapper in NYC at any point? Eric B for president , My melody, and Paid in full were the all the biggest songs in the city but he wasn't bigger than LL or Slick Rick?

When the OGs were on the corners arguing who's the best MCs in the mid-late 80's it was Rakim, KRS-1, and Big Daddy Kane and Kane was fighting a battle on two fronts because people would argue that G Rap was the best rapper in the juice crew. Nobody was saying Slick Rick or LL was over any of those guys.

This is why i don’t engage in convo with you on hiphip or especially our knicks threads.

I simply asked what his criteria was for KONY. And you talking about “can’t get KONY off elder”.

I never said he should be KONY in 2020 because of illmatic. I mentioned he dropped 6 critically acclaimed albums, during that 4 yr run.

Engage in a legit debate or FOH with smilies.

I clearly asked what the criteria was for his KONY rankings. If it’s commercial success, biggest radio hit or most records sold. Than sure go with pop smoke, nikki minaj, cardi b types for 2020-2023.

But if its critically acclaimed albums, than it has to the 6 album run nas has with Hit.

Last 3-4yrs Nas has been killin it. Dropping grammy nominated albums and winning. Selling out arenas, huge MSG shows, world tour with WU. The huge 50k crowd he put together at Shea stadium for hiphop 50.

when you mention king of new york, obviously it means that they need to have some type of current relevance in their city. the nas "6 album run" was cool and all, but it was clear that they werent big staples in the city, especially after kings disease 2. i wouldnt even call jay the king of new york in 2017, and 4:44 was critically acclaimed as well and 10x bigger than every nas album in the past 4 years. the old heads arent pushing the culture & sound forward and are considered a niche market at this point, so why would they be the "king of new york?"

I think he gave that year to Rick cause he was on more nationwide radio. Same with LL.
I get that fam. Again, he has no criteria or not sticking to one when he puts these lists out.

He needs to take a break from these lists, rethink his strategy, get a better team to come with rankings and release them.

50 in 04-5 was the last king of New York. Hasn’t mattered since

You could make an argument for Pop smoke since he was the king of the drill movement but that’s about it

highkey, i strongly agree that a majority of the past 10-12ish years that there hasnt been a true official "KONY". pop smoke in 2020 is the only really strong argument in recent memory.
