I hear what you are saying but arguments for those fights can be invalidated.
Margarito was NEVER the best fighter in the division. Thats first of all. During the time Margarito was a WW, the best fighters were Trinidad, DLH, Quartey. then Mosley, Forrest, Mayorga. then from Mayorga to Spinks. Spinks loses to Zab who is undisputed, he loses to Baldomir. Margarito never had a legitimate claim. When Floyd fought Zab he fought the most dangerous guy and 2nd best after Baldomir, then beat Baldomir who was lineal champ. So lets put the Margarito arguments to rest...especially after he lost to PW. He never had a claim as the best welterweight.
As soon as PW beat Margarito he lost to Quintana. A PW fight was never bigger than any other fight....likewise to Vivian Harris at 140 who was a legitimate threat. TR didnt want the Cotto fight too soon, kinda like the position Canelo is in now...they wanted to make as much as they could first and by the time he got to WW, there were bigger fights around. He wanted to fight Pac but we have discussed that too many times to repeat.
margs was welter champ since 2002... he beat all the supposed number 1 contenders or rising stars in that division... he was on hbo ... he was a more accomplished welter weight champion than oritz or guerrero combined... at the time lewis, citron etc were guys that ended up suckin but at that time they were pick em fights against two contenders... he didnt just get lucky in one fight and then want a title shot...
he had been a welter for more than 6 years.. he didnt have the luxury to cherry pick fights... he might not have been the BEST fighter in that division but he was one of the best... dlh was considered one of best and he wanted no parts of margs.. they had sparred together....
i dont know if you remember but when espn did ppv boxing one time he was co feature with mosley...(he fought citron 1 and mosley fought some other tune up) and mosley said nah im good im not ready for margs yet...
guys like vernon forrest were ducked just like margs pwill were... only reason you now could say that forrest is a great fighter is cause mosley gave him the chance... forrest couldve been EASLY FROZEN OUT OF THAT WW FOR MANY YEARS... you think dlh wanted any parts of forrest... hell no... then he blew with mayorga...
ppl wanna assume he was a slouch or a bum.. but his style of fighting was a tough out for any fighter... guys like cotto and pac have him the buisness and margs kept comming...
its like guys like clottey or p will never get their due to how much of a tough out or fight they are cause the top dogs in their division never wanted to really fight them...
p will and margs were forced to fight each other... and p will won but anybody who saw that fight knows it wasnt a blow out...
your right.. p will, clottey , margs were never lineal champs.. but to suddenly jus dismiss em as if they never exisited or were never part of that whole division is not accurate...
pwill and margs would kill baldomir... i would also say judah too...
now with that said yeah it prob dont make sense to fight some tough fighter for cheap money... but when they did the 8 mil to may and may said naw ill make 8 mil plus 1 dollar to fight baldomir AND HIS EXCUSE WAS MARGS HAD TOO MANY LOSSES AND WAS A NOBODY... then years later he props up guys like ortiz and guerrero
you dont think dlh couldve fought margs... BEEN MEXICO AGAINST MEXICO AND sold millions.. ESPEICALLY IN 2006 OR 2007... but dlh actually sparred with him before .. he wanted no parts of him..
quartey last fought at ww in like 2000 trinidad last 147 fight was with dlh in like 1999....
fact is when may moved up to welter he was going into divisions that were occupied by dlh , margs, mosleys of the world...
it woudlve been awesome to see 2007 margs v. may...
that Kwame Brown is not a scrub. There are only 450 jobs in the league and he has one of them paying him $7 million per year. As many guys that come out every year you would think they would be able to take that scrubs spot.
