47 mins in & there's def some hating vibes. Not saying 9th a saint but without his beats in the beginning, they wasnt gonna pop
Yea if anything I feel like this made me side with 9th. They're the ones who told him not to join the first tour. Then they act slighted cause he was like "aight":yeshrug:....I can't stand passive aggressive shyt like that. It's female type behavior. Cause from 9th's end he prolly felt like they didn't want him there. And they even said they formed a bond very quick and 9th was pretty much the odd man out.

Seems like they were salty about dude blowing up and following opportunities. At the end of the day if he's giving you all the beats then he's apart of the group. Period. Don't matter if he's not behind the boards at the shows or not chilling with y'all in the studio. Y'all are rapping over his music. End of story. They even said he's not really a social guy like that so don't see why they'd be surprised if he's not constantly in the mix when he's really not needed like that. Y'all got the beats. That's enough.

Then he goes to London and they basically push him away and tell him to kick rocks. So it seems to me 9th was willing to make an effort but they were too prideful to make amends and just let it be. It had to be all or nothing. And that's just not realistic when you're dealing with a high level producer.

This whole time I always thought it was 9th who was acting like a diva. But now it seems like it was phonte and pooh all along who were acting jealous. And pooh still seems bitter about it. But it is what it is. They went their separate ways. Still made dope music. 9th has had a successful career. But they let their ego's get in the way.

Yeah I'm a huge fan of LB. Even think the latest album MTLW was their best album ever. But I gotta say this doc kind of put both Pooh and Te' in a worse light when it comes to the 9th beef. I think they all kind of saw each other on near the same level at the start (especially 9th and Te') but as time went by it was clear 9th was the star of the group despite not being the guy writing the bars so I think they were slighted from that point on and were always worried about that perception of not being equal to 9th's production. I think they would've been bigger if they kept shyt going without the beef. I remember the Justus League movement having a nice little headlock on the underground. Even on Drake's comeback season he spits on 9th's production and has TWO different LB features on there. You keep that relationship solid no matter what if I'm Pooh and Te'. Despite it all they definitely have an indelible mark on the game for sure.

Phonte and Pooh laid it out pretty clearly, as LB the bulk of their money was made through touring, the Heiro tour was one thing but 9th didn't want to commit to a full-time tour schedule as LB progressed. How is the money going to be split if you're not a full-time member of the group where most of the money is made? It has to be more than just submitting beats, as we've seen they can get plenty of folks to do that.

You articulated what I felt after watching the doc way better than I did. Agree with all of this. I always thought 9th was 100% in the wrong based on what I heard and read but this doc actually changed my perspective on that situation, for all the reasons you described above.

I think 9th felt he outgrew the group when he started producing for others. He didn't want to tour and do the extra stuff which is where the real money was made for the group. 9th had the luxury of making beats for artists and making money that way. Phonte and Pooh had to grind to make paper.

9th drama aside, what amazes me is how they started making The Listening as college kids :dahell:. That's incredible. I guess 9th would've been a little bit older at the time but still. And they supposedly recorded in an apartment??
alot of talented folks living on one campus at the same time, besides LB/Justus League you had Yahzarah there and also Tamisha Waden who is a Foreign Exchange affiliate

I dont think 9th expected to get any tour earnings. Let's be honest, did he need it :comeon:

Why wouldn't he need it? Them nikkas weren't making money like that off of record sales due to that janky ass ABB Records deal, so 9th was gonna continue to be in the group while they made pennies off of records sold while Pooh and Phonte kept all the tour money? That shyt doesn't even sound logical.

I wouldnt think 9th would expect tour income when he wasnt touring. I think they would have said that as that would be asinine. Also after the Jay & Destiny child production, he was good

Yeah, this exactly. I got to know them right after they finished recording The Listening but before it came out.

Missie Ann studios was right there in Raleigh right on NC State's campus. 8th floor. Comanche lived there. Everyone would record up there. Median, L.E.G.A.C.Y., Sean Boog, Joe Scudda, Chaundon, etc. Justus League adjacent artists like Thyrday recorded a lot there too. EA Floe lived in the same apartment building. I remeber being there and someone's phone would go off during a session and a verse would have to be re-recorded. Everyone would have to get quiet because it was right there in just a bedroom.

The computer also didn't have speakers that would pan left or right. So to know where the sound was for certain effects, 9th would take a guess. They'd burn a CD and go listen in the car. And then if it needed to be adjusted left or right they'd just take another guess, and keep burning CDs.

At some point in '03 Comanche and EA Floe kept recording there, but there was another studio in Durham built called The Chop Shop, and that's where The Minstrel Show was recorded, and most of the guys that lived in Durham and not Raleigh started recording there. Same for the folks that also had Big Dho manage them (LB's manager from the start until they broke up). I was around for some of those sessions, but not around for any of The Listening sessions.

FWIW I do feel like 9th was pretty solid after the Jay and Destiny's Child joints. He had the full album with Murs and Buckshot before Minstrel Show dropped, and Jean Grae. They were all pretty solid names at the time, and his name was definitely popping off with a lot of opportunities. There were still some big checks for producers back then.

I firmly believe Phonte was always going to pop off no matter what but you’re right in the sense that 9th gave them the initial sonic landscape to find themselves as lyricists and song writers. I’ll say if you listen to Getback and May The Lord Watch those two albums prove they didn’t need 9th to make great music.

9th refusing to tour with then while they carried the group’s name and legacy on their backs was foul. Imagine Guru touring as Gang Starr without DJ Premier or Will Smith touring as The Fresh Prince without DJ Jazzy Jeff, it would be foul.

Most of the Aphilliates Crew (Cannon, Sense, Jamad, & Drama) were either at Clark or within the AUC when they first cliqued up.
