People saying why the Rams include those picks are forgetting how trash Goff's contract is

They had to sweeten the deal for any team to take that off their hands

Lions can get out of Goff contract in two years. Goff is one of the worst qb's in the league though, so yeah the rams were always going to have to attach picks to move him.

he wasn’t as good then as he is now. He’s currently a much better qb than he gets credit for. Especially these last few years. If mcvay can get him a run game he can play action off of you guys will be far better at the QB position thank you realize.

IMO the only reason he is viewed as Average is because he has to overcome everything that was wrong with the franchise and he was paid like a top guy. He also stunk it up a lot prior to 2018.

Stafford had to drop back and sling it every game with the opposing defense knowing there was no run game. He also knew the defense wouldn’t hold a lead. Of course you’ll make mistakes playing that way.

to add to this our last coach demanded ball control offense so we always got behind. We could never start the game playing vertical. That held him back.

I’m one of the lions fans that piled on to stafford up until 2 or 3 seasons ago. He improved under Caldwell, Cooper, and Bevelle.

Some lions fans just won’t let the past be the past.

yeah and Staffords A game or ceiling is much higher then Goffs.

If you’re the Rams you have to take the risk. You know Goff isn’t gonna get you over the hump so why not take a chance on a Qb who you’re not sure if he could but gives you a much higher ceiling

Just to play devils advocate for a second and iam a fan of the trade for the Rams but the anti Stafford people will say look at the weapons he had in Detroit he had more weapons there then he will in LA and he didn’t put up great numbers with a good supporting cast so why will he play better in LA?

I guess your answer would be much better coaching, better oline and much better team overall where maybe in Detroit he made some bad mistakes because felt he had to score on every possession because they had a bad defense where in LA he won’t have pressure to score 30 every game just to have a chance to win

That’s really the only way to justify this, Matt Stafford is a proven QB who can avg you 4000 yards 25/10 a year, and turns it on in crunch time, he could possibly play at this level for the next 5 years barring a bad injury.

Goff has already shown his ceiling his best year was in his second season the past 3 seasons he’s been very turnover prone and has already created bad habits that are hard to break.

The Lions will be drafting another QB within 2 years mark my words.
His ceiling is 32 td's/4600 yds and a superbowl appearance :patrice:

What has Stafford accomplished again?

Yeah if you’re the Rams you have to take this chance.

As you said the Rams know they weren’t getting over the hump with Goff is just isn’t good.

If they kept him it would be the same story every year. Good team but Goff just isn’t good enough

As far as windows 32 isn’t that old in today’s day and age for Qbs but also the Rams window is NOW and the next few years.

With a hard cap nobody has 5–10 year windows in the NFL. Most only have a few year window of contention because the hrs so destroys your core eventually.

The exception of having a small window is Brady/Bellichek but good luck replicating getting the best Qb/coach of all time l.

Eh, it’s been 12 years and he hasn’t even won
a playoff game or the division. We’ve seen other QBs in suboptimal conditions at least do that much

On a side note it seemed like beneath the surface there kind of was an issue that Jared Goff was a blue blood born & raised Bay Area guy who grew up a Niners fan and even wears #16 in honor of Joe Montana. He's a huge Giants fan and it was kind of a cringeworthy embarrassing moment for him when he first arrived in LA after getting drafted and had to throw out a first pitch at Dodger stadium in a Dodger jersey. Then on top of it all the Rams got swept by the Niners in both 2019 and 2020 in the home and away games. After his performance against the Dolphins and McVay seemingly preferring Wolford in the playoff game the writing was on the wall. He's a low key guy but there was never really an embracing of him by the city nor him of the city

Likely this draft
Detroit Lions reportedly trading Matthew Stafford to Rams for 2 first-round picks, Jared Goff

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 draft, Goff has made two Pro Bowls and led the Rams to a Super Bowl in 2018. But his performance has waned in recent years, and L.A. wanted to get out from underneath a contract Detroit now will inherit. Goff is still owed $43 million in guaranteed money, including a $2.5 million roster bonus due on March 18, a $25 million base salary in 2021, and another $15.5 million roster bonus due on the second day of the 2022 league year.

He’s penciled in as the QB1 for now, but a league source says Detroit is still considering taking a quarterback with the seventh overall pick.

I think in a few this will be seen as mediocre to bad for both sides. I can see the Rams trying to get a first-rounder in 2027-2028 so they can draft a QB.
