Stat Padford is the textbook definition of unrealized potential. Detroit hasn't been so awful that he should have only 3 playoff appearances in 12 years...and ZERO division titles in 12 years. This speaks to his limitations as a floor raiser, as every team in that division has had off years in the last dozen years, and he certainly had about a half-decade stretch where Detroit had some of the top talent at the skill positions...

His resume of being a perennial loser as a first overall pick is simply unacceptable. He's had weapons and failed to make his team a contender, I can't for the life of me figure out how people see this massive gap between he and Goff. Even PFF grades them as the 10th (Padford) and 13th (Goff) ranked quarterbacks since 2017, hardly enough of a distance to warrant the haul LA gave up for Padford...

I have no clue where this idea that Stafford is a championship upgrade from Goff when Goff took them to the championship. Maybe rebuild the offense with the personnel that let dude shine first before washing your hands with him...

did you watch lions games week in week out?

Full disclosure. Padford was a bum until 2018. I couldn’t stand him and I gave him all the blame for every loss. @dh86 would could verify this.

Stafford wasn’t the problem in Detroit. Neither was Slay or Diggs or bevelle. It was all Patricia.

yeah and Staffords A game or ceiling is much higher then Goffs.

If you’re the Rams you have to take the risk. You know Goff isn’t gonna get you over the hump so why not take a chance on a Qb who you’re not sure if he could but gives you a much higher ceiling

Just to play devils advocate for a second and iam a fan of the trade for the Rams but the anti Stafford people will say look at the weapons he had in Detroit he had more weapons there then he will in LA and he didn’t put up great numbers with a good supporting cast so why will he play better in LA?

I guess your answer would be much better coaching, better oline and much better team overall where maybe in Detroit he made some bad mistakes because felt he had to score on every possession because they had a bad defense where in LA he won’t have pressure to score 30 every game just to have a chance to win

that’s exactly what I’m saying.

Im not here to cape for Stafford. I didnt watch him like that to know his ins and outs.

In fact alot of this trade isnt even about Stafford. The rams main goal first and foremost was offloading the Goff contract onto Detroit. Which is why they asked for everything they asked for AND made the offer more enticing by throwing in Stafford.

As someone who has watched every pro snap Jared Goff has took, im telling yall, he's far worse that any of you think.

Physically, he has all the tools. But he's severely lacking in the brain part. He's a slow processor, cant read defenses, and cant see the second or third read since he cant read defenses. 90% of his success was due to having a insanely productive Todd Gurley and a above average offensive line. Once the Rams lost Guard Roger Saffold to the Titans, didnt resign Center John Sullivan and Todds knee gave out, you see how bad he looked in 2019. This year we struck gold with Darrell Henderson emerging and Cam Akers having a breakout rookie season...halved the Playbook to mold to Jareds weaknesses....ran tighter sets to give him more protection....upgraded the Defense to be more potent....resigned Kupp and Woods...drafted Van Jefferson....And his numbers were still shyt.

McVay and Snead believe that the roster currently constructed can contend for a Super Bowl and I see it too. No one expects Matt to come in and be Pat Mahomes...the Rams toward the end of the Regular Season were just asking Goff to NOT fukk UP. And he couldnt even do that, having his usual turn overs in late games vs the Jets and especially the Seahawks. Games that were difference between winning the West AND even contending for HFA.

This boggles my mind for both teams

Rams needed to get rid of Goff and his contract If you remove Goff from the equation it's pretty much a 1st and a 3rd for Stafford. That's a good upgrade for them. Tampa bay was 7-9 last season and a competent QB was all they really needed and now they're playing in the Superbowl. The Rams were 10-6 this season and almost made it to the NFC championship game mostly because of their defense. All they need is a competent QB and Stafford is at the very least that..

edit:
The Lions get 2 1st round picks and a 3rd round pick plus they have a starter until another one come's a long. They can cut Goff in 2 years.

And just like that the number #1 overall pick is in the bushes

So Marcus Mariota ,
Jameis Winston,
Jared Goff,
Mitchell Trubisky, and soon Carson Wentz

All bushed in like 5yrs after being drafted as high picks

This ain't new.. going back not that far..
Tim Couch,
Akili Smith,
Jamarcus Russell,
Daunte Culpeper

And who is next ..
Tua ?
Kyler Murray ?
Lamar Jackson ?

After seeing what just happened teams are again about to waste high picks on QBs in this year's draft

Everybody loves Trevor Lawrence but I got a bad feeling about him

If I had that pick I'm trading it for Watson

That’s really the only way to justify this, Matt Stafford is a proven QB who can avg you 4000 yards 25/10 a year, and turns it on in crunch time, he could possibly play at this level for the next 5 years barring a bad injury.

Goff has already shown his ceiling his best year was in his second season the past 3 seasons he’s been very turnover prone and has already created bad habits that are hard to break.

The Lions will be drafting another QB within 2 years mark my words.
I'm pretty sure that's the plan. They ain't looking for a long term commitment to Goff. That nikka a stop gap that got them another 1st Rd pick. After year 2 with the Lions he has damn near no cap hit and will be benched or shipped. He wasn't traded to be some franchise savior.
