The fact that he still obtained a banned assault rifle obviously means something isn't working. A quick google search brings up plenty of suggestions but I like what Australia did according to this article:He was using outlawed assault rifles... what control measure beyond banned would you propose?
He noted that, among other things, the Australian government “banned automatic and semiautomatic firearms, adopted new licensing requirements, established a national firearms registry, and instituted a 28-day waiting period for gun purchases. It also bought and destroyed more than 600,000 civilian-owned firearms, in a scheme that cost half a billion dollars and was funded by raising taxes.” The entire overhaul, Friedman pointed out, took just months to implement.
He made the guns automatic.. not hard
Crack down on the permissive gun culture in the Southwest. Lot of good ol' boys down there with Gadsden flags who can show you some "other" merchandise after the gun store's closing hours. He was using outlawed assault rifles... what control measure beyond banned would you propose?
The chances that the US will approve gun ownership restrictions like those you see in Europe are equal to the chances that European countries will relax guns ownership laws to what we have here in the U.S.
Two completely different societies/cultures. It's not about trying to make the U.S. appear "exceptional" or better. It's just DIFFERENT. A waste of time and political capital.
And I find it interesting that all of a sudden people discount how a nation's political/social/cultural norms would affect what kinds of policies one can assume would have a reasonable chance of being implemented. How is that even controversial? We see it all the time.
