No it's not an attempt at that. It's an attempt to cast a person with a name in a role rather than putting an Asian in the role so they don't piss off China. It's the same basic shyt as the ghost in the shell debacle

Sony went into a co-production deal with the Chinese government for that crappy Karate Kid reboot starring Jacki Chan and Will Smith's kid...China made them change the movies name, do reshoots and cut out all sorts of stuff (like some bullying scenes and a kiss between Jaden Smith and a little Chinese girl) for the China cut but the one thing they didn't give a damn about was Chan playing the wise old Asian master teaching the Westerner (a black Westerner at that!) kung-fu.
So I think Marvel could have gotten away with casting a Chinese actor/actress to play an immortal magician who teaches some white guy how to become a sorcerer.

Yeah, I just read an article on this. Marvel had this Chinese company with ties to the government consult on IM3 so they insured release there. Can we assume they did the same thing here?
The article said if the movie even shows Tibetan culture it would get banned.
