If they didn't want to make the Ancient One Tibetan, why didn't they just make him Chinese then? It's not like there aren't any high snowy mountains in China itself.:mindblown:
Yup, this was my first thought after i listened to that double toasted interview with the co-writer last week.

He was makin some good points up until the end when he tried to justify 'falling on the sword of feminism' through casting a white woman as the character... because casting a Chinese woman in the role would be a disater given the political history, and people weren't thinking this through..

I was like: ":patrice:....

...but why would the Chinese actress have to be Tibetan in the first place??"

Marvel has a track record of making asian chacters white.
Thats what got the Gen-X tv series canceled after just the pilot.

Surprised no one has brought up what they did with the Mandarin from the Ironman film yet...

Anyway, on the other hand they also have a track record of making white characters black.
Nick Fury, Kinhpin, Human Torch, in fact the one black dude in this Dr Strange flick isn't even supposed to be black. There are zero black people in Dr Strange comics. One of the reasons I don't fukk with it. Of my thousands of comics I might have like 2 issues of Doctor Strange. And I think one is only cause its a Blade crossover.

Dr Strange is racist as hell.
Hes stays on his Fin Fang c00n

th
The Daredevil and Fantastic Four movies weren't made by Marvel Studios, they were made by FOX, you can't pin this on them. MCUs Nick Fury is black because he's based off the Ultimate-universe Nick Fury, who's based on Samuel L Jackson, ironically enough.

If she's celtic why is she in tibet lmao, why not have this bytch in ireland

The Shadow came out in 1994 and the Tulku in it, nobody cared lmao

They didn't have to make the ancient one from tibet, he could've been any other asian and they didn't even have to mention a country lmao

that guy the bus driver Wong in the movie, but master of eastern philosophy is a white woman lmao

I never knew so many cared about the ancient one so much:heh: shyt, Baron Mordo is played by a Nigerian :heh:

Marvel still looks stupid for the explanation.

It's the fact the character is white. Is the fact they have a white person impersonating an asian lmao

Mordo isn't black trying to convince us he's white.

if they didn't want controversy they didn't have to make the ancient one associated with any type of asian shyt just like they did the mandarin

Could've made this real easy on themselves by either not saying shyt or just cast an Asian and make the role and character non stereotypical. I don't see why either one of those things are hard to do
Casting an Asian they would enter "The Last Samurai"/"8 Mile" territory. A white person learns something from the minority and then becomes the best (Sorcerer Supreme)! That would get criticism to, they picked their poison and it will most likely play financially being one of the few movies to get released in China.
Gotta protect the paper, that's the entire reason they are doing any of the movies.

Then you write the character so that it doesn't have that issue. They adapt these books and characters all the time. Just be better man

Uh I think this is an attempt at just that.
Either he is never Sorcerer Supreme or the Ancient One isn't a minority. There isn't much wiggle room between those two options.

They probably could have made even more China money by casting Jackie Chan as The Ancient One...or if they wanted to do the gender bending thing than they could have cast Shu Qi, Zhang Ziyi or Li Bingbing in the role instead of white ass Tilda Swinton Any popular Chinese actress would have been a better move.

How does that solve the 'whites appropriating ethnic culture and then becoming better at said culture' angle? It doesn't.

No it's not an attempt at that. It's an attempt to cast a person with a name in a role rather than putting an Asian in the role so they don't piss off China. It's the same basic shyt as the ghost in the shell debacle
