Actually, I think this needs to be emphasized: You're right that they were completely unrelated. He didn't leave Jaguar because he had a chance at Chevy lined up, he left cuz they were bad business.

Juxtapose that with Heinz a few episodes ago. He supported sticking with that minor division of Heinz (don't know why I can't think of it right now) DESPITE having a shot at Heinz ketchup, because that minor division was good business.

The sudden merger, I think, was a result of him being fed up with having acquiesced to bad business deals like those. And he had Roger's buy-in before it became more than just a bar room tale (i.e. by time the GM meeting happened) so I don't think it's that much worse than three partners planning an IPO without his knowledge.
