I love when cats say "hip hop was birthed out of the civil rights movement"

when it clearly wasn't. Hip Hop (actually rapping) was birthed out of the Jamaican party scene and brought over and utilized in the NY party scene. "THe message" was probably the first political/social/fight against the powers that be hiphop record in America and that was at least 4 years after rappers delight and almost 10 years after Herc came up with the 2 turntables and mixer setup at house parties. Just because the innovations in music -hiphop - happened at the tail end of the civil rights movements doesn't mean it was birthed from it - it almost makes it seem like the civil rights movement caused hiphop or helped create it, when the music had nothing to do with it.

People like rewriting hiphops history to fit into what we want it to be - almost in a way to ostracize others from the art.

the thing is the selectah - and the soundbowy in dance hall = the emcee and the DJ in rap ...

FUNK + DISCO X Dancehall = Rap

the first rap Dj is Jamaican ...:yeshrug:

Don't need to know someone's whole story, if the song is dope play it. Too much politics, not enough dope music...

So, you only listen to music that a bunch of people will listen to, like the hood? No beef and not trying to start an argument, but I wanted to ask since I found this interesting. (I do agree that his music ain't getting play in places like that tho.)

Wtf??? Granted, hip hop culture ain't what it used to be...but it's arguably a bigger culture than ever. It's so big you look past major advertisers, marketers, writers, producers, etc incorporating hip hop into their work.

Trust me...hip hop culture is being borrowed and stolen on a regular basis but right now it is STILL majority owned by us.

So it's not apparent to us that yet that there's a concentrated effort to renew racial tension and bitterness the same way a disgruntled ex would be better at their significant other?

Honestly this was kind of boring and put me to sleep. I'll try to listen to it again later. Why are people making such a big deal about this like its some groundbreaking interview. Since when did Macklemore become the spokesman for white people?
