Lupe's latest incarnation is this condescending whining douche
who has taken his twitter personality and shoehorned it into his music.
There's no longer any finesse to his song writing now he's featuring the same
N****a's and B****es in his records that he used to criticize his peers for.
Now he plays his fans and his detractors alike as idiots.
"Next to It" ?
"Bytch Bad" ?
Incredibly similar concepts, different levels of sophistication but ultimately
a LONG, LONG ways from "Sunshine" which was on the original F&L CD.
Oddly enough "Bytch bad" is directly in contradiction of "Next to It" even
if both on the surface level seem to be an affront to Misogyny in Hip Hop.
He used to abstain from certain things he once looked down
upon but now that he's dressed like Future with fukking Ty Dolla Sign
on the hook. I'm supposed to think he's some brilliant artiste with
skill beyond my understanding
F&L 2 shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath
as his first album and lasers was horrid.Neither of these albums are shining
examples of "Hip Hop", especially when several well done albums have come
out since then, from both the underground AND the mainstream.
Don't even get me started on that "But...but...What about black on black crime ?" bullsh1t
he pulled during the Trayvon Martin case.
Ok, cool. You don't like it.
Your comment bringing up NAS and the GOAT made me reply the way I did. Yeah those examples weren't overly lyrical, but it's clear that Lupe knows that for a SINGLE it may be best to slow down the lyrics for the regular listener to "get it" so to speak.
If those aren't good singles/songs for RADIO play (and I'll keep mentioning this because that's what I prefaced my initial thoughts on his recent music on) please share some other examples for comparison purposes from other artists with the same amount of notoriety as Lupe.
Thanks in advance
If we're being honest here both Kendrick and J. Cole have dropped
singles with "Substance" and both have quite a bit of notoriety
in Hip Hop with their last releases completely overshadowing what
Lupe did sales wise.
Swimming Pools and Crooked Smile both did pretty well
if I recall and neither feature any Hip Hop single cliches.
