How can ppl not enjoy this type of effort to the craft when rap is trying to say something in the most clever way possible.
I think if The Cool came out in 1994, it would've likely been named the most revolutionary type rap album ever. I'm not saying Illmatic is overrated by hip hop stans, but I feel it got the Michael Jordan treatment, where the rap game just protected the album and made it godlike and that shyt still happens to THIS DAY. It's a top 3 rap album no doubt, but nikkas just completely disregard anything else in an argument.
Body of work (heh) Nas is still superior, but I really feel Lupe's top 3 beats Nas' top 3.
The Cool and Illmatic are a push for me
Tetsuo & Youth > IWW (I'd go for IWW up until it hits Nas is Coming w Dre, and then it's scattered for the remainder tracks, while TC is consistently a classic throughout)
I don't really know what I'd put as Nas' third best album, I personally think LIG, but some people disagree
I'd say Life is Good is better than F&L but I've never given F&L a real listen
Hol up. Stop listening to T&Y right now and go embark on the grand adventure that is Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor.I think if The Cool came out in 1994, it would've likely been named the most revolutionary type rap album ever. When I'm paying 50K to Securus
Writing puzzle raps is easy, it's word association, saying a bunch of things then saying it's just a baby because the album covers have babies on them isn't impressive lyrics to me sorry lol. The rhyme to fit the rhyme scheme? "You just a baby?" That is rhymes and a rhyme scheme now?
It's not for me no, nah I don't like that style at all. People are looking for reasons to hype up the album, the whole thing is a reach, it's a real emperor has no clothes situation lol. Nah, because MC abilities on this album I feel are extremely lacking so I will say my opinion about that. I think his delivery is often wack, really wack, lyrics wack, inflections wack, so much wack shyt, just my opinion, enjoy the album if you like it but I'm not gonna lie about my opinion to fit in.
I like some of the the beats, don't remember hearing Waa Flocka before so hard to answer, not sure I ever heard a track of his. But no of course wouldn't rate an album higher simply because it doesn't do puzzle raps, it's about the quality of the work not just the style in which the work is done. Everything should be judged on an individual basis. I will check out Lupe's next project and give praise if I feel it's due, I'm not saying he can't rap, I'm saying I don't think this particular project is dope, I even liked F&L2.
Lol ok. But there's a difference in being abstract and effective. Daylight by Aseop Rock is better lyrically than anything on this album and it's very abstract. Slug's whole style is conceptual and metaphorical and he's better than Lupe, he is actually a lyricist that does a poetic abstract style well. I could go on but it's no point.
K-Rino is much better than Lupe, but K-Rino has absolutely nothing to do with the topic. K-Rino is actually hugely multi layered and diverse in his work and is a DRASTICALLY better MC than Lupe, it honestly sounds like K-Rino is a professional and Lupe is an amateur by the huge contrast in the levels. This is about Lupe though not anybody else.
Just cause he has his own message in his head doesn't make it dope. It could make it random bullshyt words thrown together, babies and zebras have their own messages in their heads too, doesn't make it profound.
But once again, I have no issues with anyone enjoying the album, only planned to listen and comment then leave the thread, but people keep replying so have to continue. At least Lupe is better than the likes of Young Thug and trash like that so I don't wanna diss him too much because that should be directed at lessor worse artists, who don't have the potential or history of good songs that Lupe has.
