He is deliberately over complicating it to try and appear intelligent and complex, that doesn't make it good or the music good. Complex shyt is better when it's natural not feeling forced, the whole album lyrically feels extremely forced, like it's reactionary to something rather than natural music/writing. Like he's trying to prove a point, all he's gonna do with this is please the people who love puzzle raps, cool, but most people don't like that shyt.

because that's what his core fanbase KNOWS him for genius :mjlol: nikka even said those were the people he's doing it for, said Lasers and F&L2 were his only straightforward joints and he's not gonna do anything like that again

but keep thinking you're making good points :mjlol: every time lu dropped some lyrical shyt nikkas used the "bu bu he's TRYING to be lyrical" angle and it makes no sense

you want him to NOT try in his raps? :mjlol: think about that

call shyt forced and unnatural because you have issues digesting what he's saying(even tho the album only been out a few days and im 99% sure you haven't made an effort to replay this shyt to break it down in the first place) :mjlol:

I cant take you serious when you say Lupe sound like an amateur and saying what he does is easy.

But okay I will play your game.

Sure, I agree with you about the art fart line you mentioned earlier in the thread and I also agree that the hook on Adoration of the magi looks simple and is not that hard to make if you want to. I couldn't understand the hype when it leaked earlier)

BUT! That's only when you take it out of context of the song and album. But from my understanding after several listens to the album, I think the hook is brilliant.

The album is partly about a young boy's life and death in the ghetto. He dies in the end of Madonna (the song just before Adoration), He is then resurrected in TRON. The album now is supposed to be played backwards.
He is reincarnated into a strippers womb on Adoration again, not a good place to be reincarnated but he gets this because the sins of his previous life.

The hook now makes sense if you take a closer look with the album in mind.

Why you ready to die? You just a baby - You lived your life with no regard of your own death( No scratches, Chopper, Deliver)
Why them tears up under your eyes? You just a baby - Could be seen as tattoo tears of the young boy or the tears of the young mother (Madonna aka. virgin Merry. But in this story she is called that since the father is probably missing and she is young like Merry.
Keep your head up in the sky, you just a baby - He is now dead. (TRON, sky=space/heaven)
Quit chasing money, never mind, you just a baby - He is now condemned for his previous sins.
(These Magi adore you) x2
Why you wanna be born again? You just a baby
- You are stuck in the karma circle as long as you sin.
Why you playing in the streets? You just a baby - He now back, this time a little kid observing the ghetto.

Here is the post on why I think this theory is correct: http://www.thecoli.com/threads/lupe...on-thread-stream.283251/page-55#post-11834845

After listening to Lupes interview with Skee I'm even more convinced that I'm not totally off in my theory.

But I'll post those things later since I spent to much time already on this shyt.

I don't wanna play any games lol. I don't even wanna do this in this thread lol. You don't have to take me seriously, but I mean in regards to MC'in on this album in comparison to K-Rino work, K-Rino's delivery, presence, flow and inflections in particular were much stronger. When you listen to 1 after the other you hear a big contrast.

Ok you agree with me about that line cool. Lmao, I understand the line in regards to the album covers etc lol.. I'm just saying it isn't good. It isn't dope, it doesn't sound good and technically the rhymes aren't good, he is rhyming you just a baby, like 6 times, that isn't great lyricism. Anyone can add interpretations to anything but they have to stand on their own, this is my point, Lupe does 1 part of the equation and doesn't do it masterfully, in the Aseop Rock song Daylight I mentioned he rhymes CRAZYILY throughout the whole song AND has the wordplay, metaphorical and intricate mastery , Lupe is rhyming just a baby, just a baby, just a baby, just a baby, just baby. There is more to it than just the hidden meaning, there are other elements that are severely lacking, vital elements. You have to have a deep knowledge about songwriting and lyricism to fully comprehend what I am saying.

Even if you take it as just the rhyme elements, Aseop rhymes better here than Lupe is doing, the breakdowns you'll have to go to genius.com cause can't copy and paste it right now but he's not just doing 1 part of it, and delivery wise there is more passion and effective inflections also...

[Verse 1]
Put one up for Shackle Me Not, clean logic procreation
I did not invent the wheel, I was the crooked spoke adjacent
While the triple sixers' lassos keep angels roped in the basement
I walk the block with a halo on a stick, poking your patience
Y'all catch a thirty second flash visual
Dirty cooperative med platoon, bloom, head-trip split ridiculous
Fathom the splicing of first generation fukk up With trickle down anti-hero smack (Kraken!)
I pace me game for zero hour completion cretin, splash
Duke of early retirement picket dream
American Nightmare hogging the screen
I'll hold the door open so you can stumble in If you'd stop following me around the jungle gym
Now it's honor and I spell it with the 'H' I stole from heritage
Merit crutched on the wretched refuse from my teeming resonance
I promise temperance towards breed with a leaning conscious
See, the creed accents responsive but my spores divorced the wattage
And I'm sleeping now (Wow!) Yeah, the settlers laugh
You won't be laughing when your covered wagons crash
You won't be laughing when the buzzards drag your brother's flags to rags
You won't be laughing when your front lawn is spangled with epitaphs
(You won't be laughing!) Then I'll hang my boots to rest when I'm impressed
So I triple knot them then I forgot them
His origami dream is beautiful, but man, those wings will never leave the ground Without a feather and a lottery ticket, now settle down

I think if The Cool came out in 1994, it would've likely been named the most revolutionary type rap album ever. I'm not saying Illmatic is overrated by hip hop stans, but I feel it got the Michael Jordan treatment, where the rap game just protected the album and made it godlike and that shyt still happens to THIS DAY. It's a top 3 rap album no doubt, but nikkas just completely disregard anything else in an argument.

Body of work (heh) Nas is still superior, but I really feel Lupe's top 3 beats Nas' top 3.
The Cool and Illmatic are a push for me
Tetsuo & Youth > IWW (I'd go for IWW up until it hits Nas is Coming w Dre, and then it's scattered for the remainder tracks, while TC is consistently a classic throughout)
I don't really know what I'd put as Nas' third best album, I personally think LIG, but some people disagree

I'd say Life is Good is better than F&L but I've never given F&L a real listen

:dwillhuh:

Uh....no. If Lupe Fiasco was out in the 90's "The Cool" would probably be Common Sense's "Resurrection"....or Ras Kass "Soul On Ice"....an underground gem in hindsight that most people slept on.

In 1994 it wasn't about who could spit the most rappity rap lyrical abstract shyt. To put it into perspective Outkast, "The Chronic", BONE, Wu, BIG and Snoop were running shyt around that time. This is gonna piss off his fans but Lupe would be a foot note in 1994.

As far as the bigger argument about "riddle rap", there's a gang of underground artists that got super obtuse/obscure lyrics that can be interpreted 1500 different ways....there was an entire sub-genre in the 90's.....I'm not knocking it, or this album, but 99.99% of the time back then when one of those guys sat down to explain what he meant, nobody got it right.

Which is :manny: if you just enjoy puzzling over the lyrics....but people also puzzled over "Lost", which is what this thread reminds me of.

Funny you said genius, cause I am actually a certified genius lol. I'm not saying Lupe can't make the music he wants to make, every artist has a right to make the music they want to make, what I am critiquing is the quality of said work. Lol it's nothing to do with him trying to be lyrical, being lyrical is good, he is deliberately OVER complicating things and making it less EFFECTIVE than it should be. Making something complex in and of itself doesn't make it dope. Nor does making it simple, it's an individual analysis. I didn't say I wanted him to not try, course he should try, plus he can do what he wants, but what's he's done here I don't rate as dope, if you do so be it, I'm not mad about that at all, it's just my personal honest opinion. I have no issues digesting what he's saying, plus there are breakdowns available anyway, what I'm saying is as SONGS and effective lyrics they are not good. Are you going to tell me about the rhyme intricacies or rhyming just a baby with just a baby with just a baby with just a baby with just a baby? My point is there other several vital ARTISTIC and MC'in elements lacking within the songs. Nearly everyone is missing my point, I'm talking about MC skill and craftsmanship also.

Can we talk about the album and keep fukking K-Rino out of at least one goddamned thread? Jesus Christ.
This thread was awesome before @JMurder responded to dude.

Now it's just like any other Coli thread ruined by some fukking a$$hole who's sole purpose was to come in here to big up a different artist that they feel like bringing some attention to. The shyt is literally disgusting. 78 pages and out of all of those, there's only been like 4 posters who said they didn't really like the album, but there's only 1 that keeps coming in here to talk about K-Rino and some other shyt. Unreal shyt honestly.

My point is Aseop had some of the elements in that song that Lupe is lacking on most of the album, he has the complex shyt and the metaphorical shyt but with better rhymes and content. It's not pointless puzzle rap, it's got more substance, my point is the style can be done better, also Aseop in the MC'in technical aspects were superior. And in the rhyme aspects also...

Prisoners 1 & 2 is incredible.....Lupe's final verse on part 1 is:wow:

Part 2 tho>>>>> Is my favorite part.

They sell they souls
They sell their selves
They ain't twelve, they old
nikkas old as hell
Old as jail, old as cells
Sold so much salt, ain't no more salt on the shelves
You a prisoner too, you living here too
You just like us, til' your shift get through
You could look like us, you know shyt get through
You should be in cuffs like us, you should get strike 2
You should get like life, you should get like woo!
You should get that twice! You should get refused
The open road, that's no parole, and no control
Over your own soul, so control, your own remote control, that your folks can hold
