A bit harsh, but not too far off from how I look at the album. "Pretentiousness" is the most apropos word anyone can use to describe Lupe and his music now. This dude literally makes music that almost patronizes listeners and it's not sonically good enough for him to get away with it. Sometimes I listen to his sh!t and I'm saying to myself "why doesn't this weirdo just fvcking spit"? I sincerely don't see how anyone can listen to his music nowadays and like it to the point where you would even entertain the thought of calling it "genius" or "classic" and some of the other words used by his stans in this thread. Like I said, it's his best effort in a looong time, but nothing special. Cole and Kendrick is showing this generation how to make intelligent, entertaining rap music that's not condescending to it's audience. That's why he can't be a Nas. As highbrow as the GOAT can sometimes get in his music you never felt that he believed he had to show that he's the smartest man in the room or like he thought he was above you. Same with Cole and Kendrick. You don't have to be esoteric and obscure to be supreme lyricists and I feel that is what holds Lupe back from truly being one of the best. All the greats made music that, whether you're a fan of them or not, the general hip hop fans can relate to in some way or another. Lupe fails to do that. At least this new variation of him.
Food and Liquor and The Cool are better than anything J. Cole has ever done. This album is more entertaining than both of Cole's last two albums and it is better produced. The people have spoken :manny:. @Khalil_4real no you didn't elaborate fully. You just said some shyt without connecting the lines to justify it. The line literally does not make any sense as you explained it without more detail.

:russ: This album will sell first week over 350, 000 less than Cole did first week. The people have spoken :russ:

Lupe spittin on prisoners... and that beat :ohlawd:

They sell they souls
They sell their selves
They ain't twelve, they old
nikkas old as hell
Old as jail, old as cells
Sold so much salt, ain't no more salt on the shelves
You a prisoner too :demonic:, you living here too
You just like us, til' your shift get through
You could look like us, you know shyt get through
You should be in cuffs like us, you should get strike 2
You should get like life, you should get like woo!
You should get that twice! You should get refused
The open road, that's no parole, and no control
Over your own soul, so control, your own remote control, that your folks can hold

You better watch these nikkas (en garde)
If it was up to me, I would never unlock these nikkas :scusthov:
Wouldn't rehabilitate, man, I would just box these nikkas and throw away the key, I'd throw away the key like the coast guard watching me :camby:
(I'd throw away the keys)x3

Better watch these nikkas (en garde)

Was having a look at some random people's reviews of the album, some were interesting....

A depressingly mediocre album from a rapper who used to be considered one of the best in the game. Even disregarding the quality of his earlier work, this is still a disappointment. Most songs drag on for far too long, the lyrics reek of pretentiousness, and Lupe's flow is both obnoxious and meandering. All of this combined with the bloated length makes the album a chore to listen to. You're much better off listening to The Cool again and pretending this doesn't exist.

HipHopDX is a WWE wrestler? What?

But it's not about them, it's about what the people said, these were the most important statistics from that whole review...

Average User Rating:
4.58
24 people have voted.
5 is the most popular ranking.
18 people gave it a perfect five.

Since you seem to think what Hiphopdx and the people on that site thinks matters.

Here is something interesting for you.

With Hiphopdx giving it 4.5

+ the professional reviewer on DX gave the album you posted about a 3.5

:ohhh:

I was even gonna ignore your attention seeking post. But after seeing you flood a troll thread with 4 pages of message board reviews I once again had to show you how hypocritical you can be.

When "facts" fit your view they are valid but as soon the person that not share your opinion use the same kind of facts you claim its not the same thing and dismiss them with out explaining why.

Stop posting in this thread if you only gonna post a other persons negative review of the album with the caption "interesting".
And don't claim you are here for a discussion. Cus that post brings nothing new to the table. What that single person on the whole internet thinks, is nothing that have already been said in this thread.
So why post it? Either you just did it to shyt on the album or you are trolling.

We get it. You dont like the album. Nothing you say will make us like it any less and nothing we say will change your view.

And dont respond to this post if you really have some smart comback, post it in @intilectual recipricol 's thread. So we dont flood this thread with anymore of your pity complaints.

I don't, my point in the other thread, which you took out of context was that someone said there had been no reviews, which there has. And I was talking about what K-Rino fans think that heard the album, no other artist, lol this is a Lupe thread though about his album lol, lol at you being emotional and pathetic enough to post it in here lmao.

Not really impressed outside of Mural

Lupe's performance is great, and some of the rapping is next level.....but the beats are average and the songwriting just is not interesting

The best tracks on the album outside of Mural are the 4 seasons instrumental interludes. Those are excellent.

It seems like an album that is more impressive than it is enjoyable. Like Hip Hop prog music. Intellect at the expense of songwriting and musicality.

Its also way too long. I have no problem with 8 minute songs, but there should be a thematic reason for them being so long. These are just long for the sake of being long. On some 'hey, look at me' shyt

The Pizza Man track has a great concept, but is a bit too literal which is off putting. Should have been treated more as a metaphor.

The Chopper song has some interesting writing but is annoying in its execution.

Most of the other stuff has just not been memorable.

I still have 15 more minutes to listen to, I ran out of time.
:ld: i usually agree with you on tv shows and find you objective, so i'll keep this is mind while i take my first listen.

If you're talking about pure abilities and talent and depth then Lupe is the GOAT and it's not that close IMO. His body of work(no pun intended) when you look at his five albums and 5 mixtapes also adds to my belief that's he's the best. It's not like he's just a supreme talent who puts out mostly underwhelming material like an Eminem.

Dude's discography is great. Lasers was extremely disappointing, but let's not act like other greats haven't slipped from time to time with whack albums. Food & Liquor 2 is a good album that just suffers from not being the first one, The Cool, or Tetsuo & Youth. It was also extremely pro black which rubbed CAC critics and non-black fans the wrong way cuz he was keeping it 100. So that's three great albums, one good one, and mediocre one combined with 5 superb mixtape. His talent AND music are both certified.

If you're not only including those things done in the booth and on albums but also longevity, popularity, cultural impact, transcending the genre, etc then IMO the GOAT is Jay, Nas, or Pac. Those 3 are bigger than hip hop without needing the white privilege assist of an Eminem. They're also really great rappers in their own right so it's not like just their popularity is speaking for their greatness like a Kanye West (great artist, mediocre rapper) or a Lil Wayne(good rapper in his prime, never great, and fell off something serious).

I to this day think that Lasers got unfairly shytted on. It's a 3/5 album from a 5/5 MC and had the misfortune of coming directly after The Cool. It's his Nastradamus....
