RD wasn't even that big an album, like the jigga stans would like you to believe.
This started during the West Coast surge.

He was being himself. ...Was he supposed to rap like Brand Nubian?
He was a caked up dopeboy with Versace swagger. Wtf was he supposed to rap about. Blame the people who weren't being authentic and true to themselves.
That whole 96-99 Jiggy Hip Hop era kinda set the precedence for now
I don't necessarily "Blame" Jay-Z. That was his particular style. Not his fault wack ass rappers used that lane to promote their wackness
Kendrick Lamar is basically Arrested Development in 2018, with that fake deep nonsense. And no one's complaining about that
Nah man. Jay kind of furnish this attitude that started to be popular in the late l late and early 90s 2000s where he had a low key destain for the artform.

THAT ENERGY WAS THERE FOR A BIT BEFORE JAY Z. HE JUST BROUGHT IT TO THE MAINSTREAM AT A BAD TIME.
Let's just keep it a buck. Rap was basically clinging to life circa 96' - 97'.
After Pac and Big died that is when you had this mass infiltration of rappers wanting to be thugs/ballers, etc in the spirit of Pac and Big.
Master P.
Trick Daddy
The Hot Boyz
Mase
etc, etc.
The only reason Jay Z was promoted to the crown despite being the trash that he is, is because New York needed to reinsert itself again as the birth place and mecca of Hip Hop.
New York needed their messiah of Hip Hop after Bigs death and Jay Z was it.
New York cats love to act as if Pac and the West Coast had not obliterated mainstream NY rap circa 93'-96'.
Brehs love revisionist history
Not really. Like I said you had a few dudes on the west coast that had that energy but that's it.
Reasonable Doubt was huge in Philly I mean gigantic. Around the country it wasn't that big.
No the fukk it was not
Agrees with this here... Jay wasn't the first or hottest one saying that shyt, dudes in every region was doing it...Let's just keep it a buck. Rap was basically clinging to life circa 96' - 97'.

Disagrees with this... Aside from saying they started it, no.... It doesn't belong to NY, hasn't for a long time & them doing it best is your opinion, not bottom line........Artistically speaking hip hop is New York.
Yeah this plenty of great records from all around the country that are great but truthfully hip hop belongs in New York . It's it belongs to them and they traditionally do it the best bottom line.
