The metrics paint a favorable view of Lonzo Ball's defense. I like his anticipation in the lanes, quick strong hands, and his length (6'6 with 6'9 wingspan), he can be an elite defender like Kidd if he puts the work in. He has the potential to be a great help/weakside defender and a real playmaker on defense.Jason Kidd written all over him except he can't do several of the things that made Kidd so great (playing elite defense, breaking down a defense and creating offense for others).
Lonzo is D'Angelo level defensively for sure. He's a better athlete but that's about it, his on ball D is atrocious. The only thing he can do half-decently well is play the passing lanes from time to time, but so does Russell. Ball trying to defend the PnR is embarrassingly bad.
"Intangibles" are an easy way to brush aside all the important stuff he can't do.. sounds like when a cac football player who can't run fast or jump high gets drafted... "well he's got a high motor and intangibles"
Led UCLA in defensive win shares (2.0 dWs)
2.1 steals, 1 block per 40 minutes
3.5 defensive box plus minus
3rd on team in defensive rating (100.7 dRtg)
2.1 personal fouls per 40 minutes
I don't know how you're saying he can't break down defenses, finish at the rim (73% on 2PT which were mostly in the paint), or create from others he was one of the best passers in the nation.
Ball has potential to be a Jason Kidd and Penny Hardaway hybrid, Backcourt 2000 in one man...
