Called it.
Tone deaf, and the skewed camera angles are one too many.
Vicious - Probably the biggest facepalm. He's a hysterical English villain, who is the complete opposite of the Vicious in the anime. Whiny, a moron, and not threatening whatsoever.
Faye - No sultry femme fatale, instead, a loud mouth brat, who's way too high strung, and who's better at cursing, than acting cool in any context.
Spike - Already posted this, but here we go again; Harold can't throw a kick to save his life, and clearly doesn't understand the motif of "cool". In fact, the whole series could be described as tone deaf and boorish.
Jet - Cardboard cut out of what could've been a Mickey Rourke-eque character in Rumble Fish.
The only saving grace is Kanno's musical score. She's a genius, and provides us with some epic little tunes that soar once more. But even then, the dialogue is extremely cringe. From Spike being called Fearless to quips like "I'm not gonna carry that weight"...out the gate its just extremely corny and one dimensional. Essentially the person writing the dialogue, is an angsty teen who doesn't understand any of the characters, let alone just one. Its basically cosplay cowboy bebop. The ongoing daughter/birthday is puerile and got tired real quick (the first episode), and Faye could've been a no-name bounty hunter that they happen to run into. Every episode is basically two anime episodes tied into one rushed segment after another. Which makes poignant and beautiful scenes from the anime (which they use of course), feel boring and sloppy. From the martial arts, to the angles and terrible dialogue, it all feels like everyone on set, was there for the first time.
Honorable mentions for dialogue: "You've never known true power, until you've tasted the testicles, of a man who's wronged you". "Sounds like blackmail, you are black, and male". "Fearless"
The shining light behind the turd cloud, is episode 5, which follows the worst episode in the series (cum tree/gas turning people into trees). Its a decent look into Jet's past, which means it hads all the noir motifs....but even then, it feels mediocre and seriously missing a few key beats when it comes to telling a story. This is also the episode where the audience has had enough of Vicious.Ultimately the show just lacked any cohesion, and smashed two episodes from the anime, into one. The twist at the end makes everyone hate Julia...especially when it came with no rhyme or reason whatsoever.
4/10 would skip.
