Honestly why is taking hooks ok?

Thats the hardest part of writing a song :francis:

It should be no exceptions to the rules

Cause that's just how it's always been. In the early days of hip-hop the hook was often non existent or just a phrase repeated by the MC or the crew. Alot of the first hooks were just one sentence or phrase repeated a couple times. Old school rappers didn't really do choruses, so it was never considered part of MCing.

In the 90s when they started doing actual choruses it was never considered a part of MCing, it was just a part of the commercialisation of hip-hop and a way to make it more marketable. The hook was often a guest feature. So the artist was still judged by the verse.

MCing has always been about the verses. The problem is over time wack MCs have made it so the verses don't matter and the only thing that matters is a catchy hook.

To add to what others have said above, a lot of producers make a beat, write and incorporate the chorus too.

:manny: I’d rather they steal the hook and do the verses then the other way around
The hook really the hard part though and for the verse it ain’t really the words but the flow at least for hip hop now.

I get it though back then hooks were samples, chants, featured singers.

On that Jumbotron shyt poppin Yachty didn’t write anything hard to come up with punches was light and simple but the beat, hook, flow especially the inflections make the song

We at the point that if we want to honor the rules no one should give you shyt even a delivery is too much and can make or break a rap performance :hubie:

Yes there's a skill to writing hooks, but it ain't MCing.

Being good with hooks makes you a hook guy. It doesn't make you an MC. MCing ain't about how much records you sell, it's not about how catchy your chorus is. Being a hit maker don't make you an MC.

MCing is writing your verses and spitting your verses. thats just what it is. You might think the hook is the hard part, but a good hook and a wack verse won't get you props as an MC.
