How can a movie that was essentially a flop when it came out and has never been critically regarded in any way be overrated?

It's easily one of the most entertaining movies ever made and Tony Montana is probably the most entertaining charterer ever. People mad cause rappers and athletes have a picture of Tony hanging up in their homes? :mjlol:
:russ:

everyone did the Scarface heel turn when Puffy and them started expressing their love for the movie in that bonus DVD or whatever it was.
:mjlol:

nah im joking...

or am I?!

overrated by who? that's the question man..because this film isn't rated highly like godfather or other films in category/league.

It's the mtv generation and hip hop audience who embraced this and made it into some super prolific important piece in cinema.

Yeah I agree. I was going to state that in my original post that mostly rappers and shyt made it some cult classic. I was watching it like yo I dont see the big deal.

It feeds the ego of the try hard douche tards.

It had horrible writing...

Tony comes out looking like a moron.

Carlito's Way was smarter, and a better classic to me. Carlito won, he got out the game, but he fukked by thinking coming home meant he wasn't going to be doing anymore dirty work. Even after taking the 30k (in what was an epic shoot out scene), he still only had to do one thing while running the Nightclub.....kill one guy, Benny...but he doesn't and that ultimately fukks his whole escape up...

Basically, betrayal is better than a mindless grunt getting shot in the back of the head on a coke binge.

Breh, Tony WAS a moron. He was just a tough guy from the streets. End to end he's getting circles run around him by smarter people. But, he was a badass and that took him pretty far. The point of Frank was you can either coast or burn out fast. Tony didn't have the brains to coast.

I love Carlito's Way even more than Scarface, both great movies. But Carlito is just as fatally flawed as Tony. fukkng around with his lawyer, fukking around with a younger version of himself. Carlito fukked up even bigger. Not seeing the "angles" anymore and seeing his enemies getting closer.

To be fair, Carlito so the only enemy that mattered (Benny) he just chose to do nothing about it.

Tony was a moron who thought he was a boss....deluded from coke binging, he forgot Sosa was running everything. Both were stupid, but Tony more so, as he failed to see the only enemy in front him at all times (himself).

As I write scripts and watch movies more closely, Scarface isn't great. Just has great standout parts. I hate the ending which Belly bit. Bosses have assassins. They don't send hit squads to make the news.

True.. But you have to take into account it was the 80s in Miami, where even police was saying there was open shootings in public places during that time do to the Colombian drug wars

No one was shipping that many hitters in for cat. Case in point, New York. That's how bosses move. Idk what that scene was about. Brian De Palma said he was high out his mind writing it, though.

It's an entertaining movie that's fun to watch but looking back, some of it is just ridiculous.

Case in point, Frank's character. You don't get to be a druglord in 80s Miami by being a pushover and a punk. The way they had Tony blatantly disrespecting and screaming at his boss all the time and then taking his woman right in front of him was just laughable to say the least. Any real druglord would have had Tony in a ditch somewhere way before it got to that. Not even second in commands disrespect their bosses like that.

Then that scene with him pathetically crying and begging for his life..... :mjlol::dead:

Thank you...its the most overrated gangsta movie of all time...shyt was extremely average...except for Pacino, who killed his role, what else was great about this movie? Scorsese had alread did this with Mean Streets back in the 1970s and he did it better too

mean streets was garbage :camby:

Not the type of film you can put on anytime and enjoy. I really can't watch it that often either. I have to take months to years to get around to watching it again.

I've watched this movie over hundreds of times in the late 90's-early 2000's. To this day I haven't watched it because I seen so many times :sadcam:

Moronic or not..in the drug game..the more violent u are, u get bigger and bigger. That's Escobar basically..he didn't care about human life or consequences so he ELIMINATED EVERYBODY..even Presidental nominees. All he had to do was not fight the govt after he tried to get a Senate seat and he would of been continued being one of the richest men on earth.
