this isn't a debate. Hulk Hogan is a legit American Icon

Oh, it's a debate.

Austin pretty much singlehandedly had the the company on his back for good period of time. He wrestled at damn near every house show, every RAW, every ppv each month, etc.

Hogan in his prime NEVER did shows like WWF Superstars or WWF Challenge. He would do the occasional SN Main Event and then the PPVs which were only once every 4 months. And he did some house shows, but they didnt do as many back then.

Austin also was in ground that had been traveled before, which makes it that much harder. In the 1950's you could write a "baby baby please dont leave" song and it'd be a hit, u can't do it now b/c it's been done a thousand times. Hogan got over on being the first and he was basically a real life cartoon to kids.

I was a Hogan fan as a kid...I wrote him a letter when Earthquake crushed him... I had the Hogan shirt with the rips on the back. ...my first event was goign to see him vs Big Boss Man. It was magical.....BUT dont get it twisted. Austin was the dude who you screamed yourself hoarse for at an event/show. Austin was the dude who literally entertained you without catering to being a face or a heel. Everybody, child, man and woman liked Austin.

To put it plainly, Austin was, is, and always will be.....that nikka.

The only reason why Hogan has an edge is the fact that Austin fukked up his neck. Had that injury never happened it wouldn't be close. He smashed records in the little time he had, imagine if he stayed healthy. He could've had great feuds with the likes of Cena, Batista, Orton, etc...

:what:

84'-87' Hogan worked like very few people have. He was the main reason Vince was able to kill his competition in the 80's and make the WWF a national success.

Even though Vince was signing every territory star he could find, the fact was that Hogan was the only guy who drew in every damn city. Every time the WWF had stiff competition in places like Twin Cities, Chicago, Atlanta (or wanted to take a place like California, were wrestling was pretty much dead at that point) they booked Hogan and stomped on everybody. Hell, every time the AWA or NWA outdrew them, the next time Vince would send Hogan and beat their asses until they would establish themselves as the n°1 promotion in that territory.

And Austin isn't? Even with all of his bricks on film, it's not like he's some also-ran. Hogan might be the bigger star at their respective heights, but it's really not that far off, seeing as Austin helped save the WWF from the brink and all.

Even saying that, is Austin really viewed upon as a household name to all ages in 2012 like Hogan is?

Let me put it like this: You could drop "Steve Austin" in a conversation and not get looked at like you grew a second head. That has to count for something, right?

That still doesn't make him a bigger star than Hogan.

Hogan's still a bigger household name, Austin is in a better place (no R.I.P.) in terms of life. :manny:

This.

Hulk Hogan was bigger than wrestling when he was in his prime. He put the entire industry in the limelight. Hogan exuded the romance of the 1980's like no other wrestler.

But Austin did more for wrestling than Hogan. Austin brought the industry into a new era, and it is no coincidence that his momentum started in ECW.

Austin created the environment for 90's ear stars like Rock, Undertaker, Triple H and the Radicals. If you only remember the Austin that said "what" then you really missed out.

Austin was a "Draw" before he even won the World Title. He, like Hogan, became bigger than his industry. In fact, he was giving new life to worn out characters like Undertaker, Kane, Shawn and the entire Hart family. And, real talk, Bret Hart is my dude, but truth is truth.

Finally, everyone knows that Goldberg was a direct ripoff of Austin, and that he was designed to steal momentum back WCW's way. But folks need to remember that the entire indutry "talked" like Austina and had a swagger like Austin. It wasn't just about using the word "ass" it was about an entire era that surrounded his "Attitude".

Austin's "swagger" wasn't his own, all he did was take all that shyt he saw in ecw

taz's i don't give a fukk type promos

mikey whipwrecks finisher

sandman's beer drinking

and just put it on vinces tv

before austin went to ecw, he was ric flair/buddy rogers knockoff #5006,he was buddy landel status, down to the fukking robes and shyt

I did admit above that, at their respective heights, Hogan was probably the bigger star. With that said: 1. It's not nearly the gap that the OP would like it to be and 2. I'd much rather be Austin than Hogan at this point in their lives.

To a certain demographic yeah, but I highly doubt a middle aged housewife that's never watched wrestling before would know who Stone Cold was. EVERYBODY knows Hulk Hogan's name. He's synonymous with pro wrestling.

Everyone knows who Hulk Hogan is because he's on TMZ every week rubbing baby oil on his daughter's booty or getting slurred on by his whore of an ex-wife.

If they come out into a wrestling crowd today in 2012, Austin's pop would be FAR more louder than Hogan's.
