Let's actually have a hip-hop conversation for once... Does anybody else have "IWW > Illmatic"?

I bought IllMatic when it dropped.

I much prefer IWW. At the time, Illmatic sounded too...... "traditional" for me. I still listened to it 2 or 3 times a day and knew it word for word a few weeks after I got it, though.

I really just wasn't mentally prepared to actually absorb what I was hearing. Not saying Nas was spitting these super complex lyrical spiritual clerical miracle raps or anything. It's just very bare bones and slice of life. It's not a very..... aggressive album.

At the time, I was only absorbing anger, stuff I could relate to sonically and or/escapism when it came to rap. I still listened to EVERYTHING. But my ranking criteria was different. Mentally, I was too.... young and inexperienced to grasp it. I didn't get what the album was trying to accomplish and it went over my head in a lot of ways.

Favorite Albums of 1994 (that I actually listened to that year):

SouthernPlayalistic
Thug Life vol 1
Regulate
Dare Iz A Darkside
We Come Strapped
Rappin' 4Tay's Don't Fight The Feeling (lmaooo)
Spice 1's Amerikkka's most
Ill Al Skratch's Creep With Me

note: the above list isn't in any particular order. I'm just grabbing them off a 1994 rap list as I see them.

Currency has made us trust in the Messiah
I'm spending it to get higher
Earth, Wind and Fire
singing reasons why I'm
Up early, trustworthy is a nine that bust early
Sunshine on my grill, I spill Remy on imaginary graves
Put my hat on my waves, latter Day Saints say religious praise
I dolo, challenge any team or solo
You must be bugging out, new to my shyt, home on a furlough
Ask around who's laid up, sharp and straight up
Mafioso, getting nikkas' wakes sprayed up
Skies are misty, my life's predicted by a gypsy
I'll one day walk into shots drunk off champagne from Sicily
This be the drama,
I'mma pause like a comma
In a sentence,
paragraph's indented
Bloodshot red eyes high,
yellow envelopes of lye
Opening cigars let tobacco fly
Condos are tune-proof
, we're looking out the sky's moonroof
shytting like gin and prune juice
Yo the system wants the c00n's noose, hang 'em high
Courtrooms filled up, it's off the hook while I
Just wrote a statement, like I'm facing twenty years
In the basement, chilling on the VI with Mumia
For wearing chrome, I told the judge snakes slither
Like Sharon Stone but like Capone I'm thrown, yo

he spit the same 5 syllable multi syllable rhyme pattern for 24 bars
while still making perfect sense for 24 bars

What you skip? I can't STAND "Nas is coming" and "watch them nikkas"
Nas is coming fukked up the whole atmosphere of the album IMO , shyt was unnecessary , he could have just used "Silent Murder" which was on the cassett version and replaced it with that instead ...

ThenDr. Dre is sounding soooooo corny talking and shyt. I don't think I've sat through that song since I was young and riding around with my brother. It's awful

Lol Nas is coming is alwaaaaays skipped.

I love Watch Dem nikkas but only because of Nas lyricism.

I usually skip If I Ruled The World, Nas is Coming and Black Girl Lost.
Oh damn. I don't listen to "if I ruled the world" forgot about that. "Black Girl Lost" is better to me now because of the IG hoes I deal with everyday. :snoop:
