I bought IllMatic when it dropped.
I much prefer IWW. At the time, Illmatic sounded too...... "traditional" for me. I still listened to it 2 or 3 times a day and knew it word for word a few weeks after I got it, though.
I really just wasn't mentally prepared to actually absorb what I was hearing. Not saying Nas was spitting these super complex lyrical spiritual clerical miracle raps or anything. It's just very bare bones and slice of life. It's not a very..... aggressive album.
At the time, I was only absorbing anger, stuff I could relate to sonically and or/escapism when it came to rap. I still listened to EVERYTHING. But my ranking criteria was different. Mentally, I was too.... young and inexperienced to grasp it. I didn't get what the album was trying to accomplish and it went over my head in a lot of ways.
Favorite Albums of 1994 (that I actually listened to that year):
SouthernPlayalistic
Thug Life vol 1
Regulate
Dare Iz A Darkside
We Come Strapped
Rappin' 4Tay's Don't Fight The Feeling (lmaooo)
Spice 1's Amerikkka's most
Ill Al Skratch's Creep With Me
note: the above list isn't in any particular order. I'm just grabbing them off a 1994 rap list as I see them.
