They could have easily paid those employees severance if those chose to do so is my point if they really wanted to keep them quiet.
Do you really think either the contractors or employees would keep quiet if the contractors got a severance package? In this day and age? Not one person would speak to Kotaku or to some other website? I find that impossible to believe.
Of course, but that doesn't mean that they couldn't try.
It's always amazing the excuses that some will make for the gaming industry as if they are immune from the criticism that others get. It's no wonder gamers get taken advantage of the way that they do.

Obviously contract employees don't get severance, but any other industry would get criticized if they asked those employees to keep quiet about being laid off and about future products essentially being cancelled, so why should the gaming industry be immune from that?
