Your own article says he has defensive ability. Acting like a rookie center won't improve AT ALL on defense is laughable and not even worth arguing over.
no it doesn't.
"Remember how the Sixers are 30th in Offensive Rating? Well, they're 23rd in Defensive Rating (107.3). That's still not good, but it's a number to keep in mind.
Why? Because when Noel and Okafor play together, the team's Defensive Rating is 113, the same number it is when Okafor plays without Noel. The worst Defensive Rating in the league belongs to the Milwaukee Bucks (109.6). They're 4 points per 100 possessions worse than the worst squad when the two play together.
Noel's individual Defensive Rating is 103, proving what we already knew: he isn't the defensive issue.
In fairness, though, Noel is allowing a field goal percentage of 51.4 percent at the rim on 7 attempts per game, a higher rate than Okafor's 49.4 percent on 7.9 attempts per game, per
NBA.com.
Among 51 players who face at least 5 attempts per game and who have played at least 15 games, Noel ranks just 38th, and Okafor ranks 28th. Neither have been great, but Noel's 2.6 percent Steal Rate obliterates Okafor's 0.5 percent mark.
He also holds the edge in Block Rate: 3.4 percent to 2.9 percent."
That is the entire remarks about okafor's defense nowhere there does it suggest he has defensive ability, all it states is he has the edge on noel in block rate and FG percentage at the rim. that doesn't mean he has "defensive ability", that means he's doing better than noel in two aspects.
What it literally states is that when Okafor plays that the sixers have the worst defensive rating in the league, 3.5 points worse than the bucks. Don't try spinning this shyt to suit your narrative as there's nothing to suggest he's a good defender.
And maybe he can improve and maybe he won't, I don't think he's going to improve all that much and the best case scenario for him would be what Malta said:
His man to man defense in the post is actually pretty good, his problem right now is in rotation, he's not that far behind Karl Towns and Kristaps in regards to percentage at the rim.
KAT - 46.0%
Kristaps - 46.7%
Okafor - 48.0%
He can improve to the point that he wont be a liability on defense, he's taller than Jefferson and you can hide guys like him a bit better, he's not as slow as Enes Kanter either. I suspect he'll drop 15-20lbs in the offseason and come back next year a bit quicker laterally, also Jefferson was on a top 5 defensive squad.
Which is pretty much him not being a liability on the floor and providing proper help defense. You shouldn't have to HIDE your rim protector and in our case, because I know you want Okafor over Russell right now, the Lakers would be fukking doomed as we don't even have good perimeter defenders around him or a guy like Noel to help makeup for what he lacks on that end(which the Sixers are still having trouble with). We would have been god awful in the future with Okafor and there's no reason for you to want him on our squad.
And in the end, if Embiid comes back healthy the Sixers will likely look to move him as well since there's no way they're keeping him around to play center when Embiid can actually do it at both ends.
edit: I know you like Clarkson too, as do I, and him and Okafor would be letting up damn near 120 points a game on the floor together. A guy that doesn't stay in front of his guy with a guy that can't provide help to save him whatsoever.
