These two things do not relate.
Taking out a sitting Senator or House member in favor of someone else in the primary can have bad consequences and actually help the other party win the seat. MAGA cost the GOP several seats doing this and Progressives have cost Dems seats doing this too.
This doesn't apply if the incumbent is wildly unpopular with the general electorate.
