Kurt Angle: Steve Austin Changed Wrestling | News | Fighting Spirit Magazine

Professional wrestling is an art-form which can take years to master, with some never fully grasping all there is to know about the business before riding off into the sunset that is retirement. Making his debut in late 1999, Kurt Angle was one such individual who learned quickly, becoming WWE Champion by October 2000. It was clear as early as the turn of the millennium that Angle had more than a firm hold on the fundamental skills necessary to be a main-event player in WWE; showing an ever-increasing amount of personality to add to his impressive in-ring abilities.

Widely praised for his rapid improvement, Kurt Angle has in the past been quick to acknowledge the roles played by men such as Vince McMahon, The Rock and Triple H in his development. Many fans have deservedly showered praise on Angle himself, citing his success as key in the argument that it can give an advantage over peers to have experience or training in Amateur wrestling before breaking into the pro wrestling industry.

Speaking in a recent interview with The English online magazine, Angle revealed the role played by Steve Austin during his initial year in WWE, also stating how under-rated he feels Austin is as an in-ring performer.

“One of the most underrated wrestlers – not entertainers, but wrestlers – in the history of professional wrestling. Steve Austin changed the face of wrestling. I wrestled him in my first year in the business, and I knew nothing. Austin carried me through every match that we had.”

Of course. Angle was massively overrated in 2000 in the ring. He was just a spot worker who copied Benoit for like his first 4 years. His comedy mic ability and getting under the crowd's skin was his true talent that made him stand out.

People never bring up Austin's ring work when speaking on him as much as everything else. Dude could wrestle every style and do it well. Shame injuries cut him down a bit but when you're that good you can make up for it.

Thank You GOAT Kurtis :lawd:

Huh? Kurt Angle bowed down to the Rock 10 years ago...then 7 years ago...then 5 years ago..then said the Rock was his role model:laugh: Catch up.

What he is saying about Austin is nothing new. If you weren't a bandwaggon fan of Austin from 1996 and up like most are, you would already know that. Austin was proven back in 1992 and shyt.

I agree that his ring-work in 2000 was overrated, although he was having great matches, he wasn't yet an elite worker that didn't come until a couple years later, but how the hell did he copy Benoit his first FOUR years?? :what:
The only thing him and Benoit had in common was that they both did the german suplex. Kurt Angle didn't have the intensity or submission/hard nose style that Benoit had.. the ankle lock wasn't even a featured move of his at all his first year.

Angle defintely tried to become more intense at the end of his first title run. Eventually tried to shift to a serious heel after 2002. If anyone couldnt see that? Well shows their limited scope of who they watch on a weekly basis. Kurt always wanted to be Benoit like in how he wrestled and how he came off. Benoit was the one getting standing ovations after their matches..a respect factor from the fans. Angle was good but was never that good.

Benoit got several standing ovations that were cut from Smackdown tapings. Youre too young to remember that but you have seen the most important one..WM XX:boss:

Most complete? Hes not Macho Man but he was a fast learner that was determined to stand out. Not hard with his charisma levels.

:dwillhuh: how the fukk is that relevant when you said "he was the one getting standing ovations after THEIR matches"? Benoit never faced Angle at WM XX

I dunno maybe it's just me but i didn't think "Benoit" when Angle did his whole serious heel thing, probably because even though he was intense, there was still always a level of comedic factor to it at certain moments, something Benoit NEVER did. His intense gimmick in 06' was hilarious

Like his classic "Troops" promo :pachaha:
