After abruptly closing its doors in May this year to the shock of fans and fellow developers, Japanese game studio Tango Gameworks is set to resume its activities under Krafton. The South Korean publisher announced on August 12 that it has taken over Tango Gameworks and welcomed its employees with the cooperation of Microsoft and ZeniMax Media. Krafton also has plans for the Hi-Fi Rush IP, which it has acquired rights to.

Founded by Resident Evil director Shinji Mikami in 2010, Tango Gameworks quickly went on to be acquired by ZeniMax Media, the owner of Bethesda Softworks. From there, the studio developed The Evil Within series, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and the universally acclaimed Hi-Fi Rush. In the meantime, the developer became a part of Microsoft, which acquired ZeniMax Media in 2021.

This will go down as another studio Microsoft let get away

Nice, I wonder if they can retain the staff, but this very good news. They should be able to fund the studio because PUBG still prints money. I still have no clue what Microsoft was thinking. Actually I do, but you still need to have variety if you're providing a sub service. Anyway, can't wait for the sequel and their next game.

They had a game in production before getting bought by Microsoft and got closed down a year after releasing it. What chance did they get?

The fact that MS shopped them around and are working on selling them and didn't just keep the studio dead and keep the hi fi rush IP. They already got the heat for closing them. Now they are going to get the heat for "selling them" and letting the studio keep the hi fi rush IP.

MS could have easily went the other way with this

This is the second such studio off the top of my head that Microsoft allowed to leave and stay intact counting Toys for Bob.

They didn’t allow them to stay intact, Krafton has to re-recruit them. They essentially just bought the one ip and name

Stop damage controlling, man.

Just be glad Krafton is willing to pick them up. Thankfully their games will actually have a chance to sell now

"Damage control"

:mjlol:

"Krafton Inc today welcomed the talented people of Tango Gameworks to their team, marking a exciting moment in the company's global expansion and its first significant investment in the Japanese video game market," the press release reads. "This strategic move will include the rights to Tango Gameworks' acclaimed IP, Hi-Fi RUSH."

Krafton continued, "As part of this strategic agreement, KRAFTON intends to collaborate with Xbox and ZeniMax to ensure a smooth transition and maintain continuity at Tango Gameworks, allowing the talented team to continue developing the Hi-Fi RUSH IP and explore future projects. KRAFTON intends to support the Tango Gameworks team to continue its commitment to innovation and delivering fresh and exciting experiences for fans."

The press release tells a different story than you're telling. It says in cooperation with Microsoft they're welcoming the team to their company. That implies this has been in negotiations and they got the studio and IP not just the studio name. I don't doubt some people didn't wait for it to play out but this doesn't seem like a Telltale Games situation here.
