The numbers in this story is insane.

China Erupts in Mourning Over Kobe Bryant's Death

The 41-year-old retired Laker was arguably China's favorite American sports figure. News of his death became the top hashtag Monday on social media service Weibo, attracting an astounding 2.4 billion views by mid-afternoon.

Waking up to the news Monday that NBA Lakers star Kobe Bryant had died in a helicopter crash, China's millions of basketball fans poured out their grief on social media.

By mid-afternoon, local time, the hashtag devoted to Bryant's death on Weibo had attracted an astounding 2.4 billion views and tens of millions of engagements, making it by far the most widely read and discussed topic of the day.

The NBA estimates that there are over 300 million people who play basketball in China — a number equal to about 95 percent of the entire population of the United States.

Throughout and after his long NBA career, Bryan made consistent efforts to encourage and engaged with his Chinese fan base — and they loved him for it. No other Western sports star came close to attaining the same level of adulation in China as Xiao Fei Xia (小飞侠), or the "Little Flying Warrior," as Bryant was affectionally known to his fans there.

2.4 billion views in half a day? That's over 1/3rd of the earth's total population.

I think this story here confirms that Kobe's death might be the biggest of all-time just based on sheer population numbers. Kobe's popularity in Asia was something else.

Bruh the last part of your post is the craziest.

Ming is Jordan in China and Kobe been out selling Ming

Kobe might outsell Jordan this year in Jersey sells but next year it will go back to Jordan...Kobe STILL going to be selling more jerseys than Ming in a country he wasn't even born in...:wow:

At least they didn’t have to suffer from what the death certificates said. They went quick, I guess there’s some comfort in knowing that. Glad they were buried in private too, i think it was best to do it that way for Vanessa and the kids.

Very true, but for me, the horror lies in the fact that the helicopter began a full plunge at 2k feet oer minute, and they descended at that rate for 60 seconds according to reports.

The helicopter plunged into a steep descent with a rate of "over 2,000 feet per minute," making it a "high-energy impact crash."

"This is a pretty steep descent at high speed," Homendy said. "It wouldn't be a normal landing speed."

The time from descent to impact was about a minute, she added.

Kobe Bryant's Helicopter Nearly Cleared Mountain Before Crash, NTSB Says

They knew they were going to crash. Audio from doorbell cams were released a few days back. It's absolutely gut wreching to hear the helicopter descending and the subsequent crash. I can't and don't want to imagine the horror they felt. I know they didn't suffer on impact, but that descent is what disturbs me.

China got to see Kobe without the hate coming from the American media. For almost all of Kobe's career the U.S. media was attacking him. That's the only reason he wasn't universally beloved in America.

As an athlete Kobe Bryant was as admirable as it gets. I never understood how folks couldn't love him. His game was beautiful watch and he gave his all every play. Lies from the media is what kept him from being universally loved.

China knew about the case kobe had but just didn't give a shyt and the media didn't give a shyt. It was all about the game, his work ethic, his mentality, and all his qualities really resonated with chinese people.

Also kobe invested time in china for a long time. He made the effort to show love to china and it's people. He even had a kobe china charity contributing to health programs. Then 2008 Olympics where he took over that gold medal game. Another factor is that chinese people love players going for 50 every night.
