I wouldn't really group Drazen with them because he died in his prime, and at that point was more of a European legend than NBA. He was really just starting to find his footing in the league

He could have hovered and ask ATC could he ascend to 2500 ft or 3000ft to get above the fog.. Pilot could have just not go into the fog at 160 knots.. Pilot could have just delayed the flight due to heavy fog in the area.. if it was good enough for LA county emergency services to ground their helicopters due to insufficient flying conditions that could have extended to private operators

One of the last things Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna did before boarding the helicopter flight that led to their deaths was attend Sunday church and take communion, according to his priest.
Father Steve Sallot with the Orange County church the Bryant family attends, was one of the last to see him alive.
He told Eyewitness News that Kobe and Gianna stopped by Our Lady Queen of Angels in Newport Beach and received communion before boarding the fatal flight.
"He was here before the 7 a.m. mass and that's our first mass of the day. So he would obviously have been in the prayer chapel before that and he was leaving about 10 to 7," Sallot said.
The helicopter crash was reported at 9:47 a.m. that morning in the Calabasas area.
Fans, family and the community are sharing memories of the nine people killed in the Sunday morning crash.
