The episode where they went to the other dimension, one of the alt versions of the crew mentions how things were going well for him as emperor, until his brother starting pushing for democratic reform. Maybe he didn't want the same thing to happen in this universe.

That could play a part but the way I saw it he had to kill the stepmother. Even if his brother understood why he did it i don't think he wanted o take the chance that he would switch sides because of it.

Not surprising the season finale ended on a cliff-hanger as the show loves to do those. I have a feeling that all of the crew finds a way to escape though.

4 really wanted that war to happen in order to turn the tide for his planet.
