If you told me Kevin Durant was making alt accounts to defend himself on social media from random strangers I'd guess he's distracted from the task at hand and it'd affect his performance in some way.

73 win team my nikka.

He could be tweeting on the court and still have had a chance to win. That's a hell of a cushion.

You're just missing the point on purpose. It simply doesn't work the way you are implying. Connections are necessary period in the business world, and they just don't come around cause you're a superstar athlete. Even billionaires need connections sometimes. The Kanye example is on point cause Ye was trying to use his celebrity as a way to leverage his way into the fashion industry and they shunned him. You're implying KD could just muscle his way through the tech industry cause he a superstar and they would be in awe and bend over for him. Don't work like that. Lacob has his hands in a lot of ventures and it's nothing for him to put KD around some of those same people. I mean there is a reason KD and his team asked for the intro into the Silicon Valley world. If it was as easy as you claimed he wouldn't have to ask.

I see what both sides are saying and I think both sides have some accuracy.

KD wouldn't have been able to get the connections: I agree with this only because dude seems like a real weirdo. I doubt he would have been able to click up with the right people and get shyt moving just off personality and vision alone. I think breh was handed a blueprint and went with it.

KD could've done this on his own: I think the connections help a lot (Andreeson Horowitz in your corner is MAJOR) but if a breh like Chamillionaire can get bizzy in the tech scene, there's no reason KD wouldn't be able to. Again, maybe the hustle and knowledge of the industry may be different but KD name and $ are way longer than Cham.

I wasnt trying to say it wouldnt be possible without the connections. I was just saying the connections made it alot easier and probably cheaper as well. Why try to figure it out on your own when somebody giving you the blueprint, especially for a full time athlete

Yeah, but I don't think you put up 35 on 50/40/90 in the NBA Finals unless you block out all distractions. To me it just seems like Durant on and off the court are two different people.

You guys give too much credit to these early stage tech investments...My firm invests in the space and I have personally put money into a number of friends' start-ups.

The majority of these start-ups will fail. If you're lucky, your money is in one that will perform well and cover the failed bets.

VCs and growth equity firms invest in a ton of names knowing a decent portion will fail / perform poorly. They might be able to exit the remaining investments at a decent multiple and if they're lucky there's a home run in the portfolio.

I'm not discounting the connections KD is making it just seems some of you all act like these investments are sure bets.

The truth is the cash he forfeited had an opportunity cost to it.

of course, but you gotta start somewhere. And it seems like he got a pretty solid team around him that could be more plugged in than the average person. I think there is a big difference between throwing some money at your friend's start up and a tech exec telling you to put your money on a certain start-up. Its a risk regardless, but a worthwhile one
