Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers (Discussion Thread)

I'd say TPAB is his best album. Lyrically, music wise etc...it's his magnum opus and the type of album an artist or band pulls off once (or like 5 times in the case of people like Prince or Stevie Wonder).

Too early to place Big Steppers but I don't see myself placing it above DAMN. I feel like this probably is a 3/5 or 3.5/5 album whereas DAMN is a 4 for me. But too early for definitive statements for me.

I just don’t see what y’all see in that TPAB shyt so much. I even tried to listen to it again recently. I just CANT. And ain’t no way in hell DAMN is better than Section 80. DAMN is boring as fukk compared to Section 80.

I NEVER a million years thought Kendrick could put out a project that comes anywhere near TPAB. It's probably my 2nd favorite album ever(right behind Tetsuo & Youth). Literally flawless from start to finish. GKMC was really really good, and DAMN was good too, but TPAB was that ONE.

With that said, few spins in, Mr Morale and The Big Steppers left me with that same feeling of awe . I'm not going to say it's better than TPAB, but it's definitely a masterful piece of work. This is why you don't rush artists. When you're dealing with true greats, the wait is usually worth it. I think the only track where I'm kinda ehh on was Rich Spirit. Not bad or anything, but I could have done without it.

I didn’t say T&Y was pretentious. I LOVE T&Y and think it deserved album of the year the year it came out. I said people are ACTING pretentious everytime Kendrick drops a project. nikka said he don’t trust anyone who puts GKMC over TPAB.

If you're looking for more of a traditional rap experience, I can understand why you might enjoy GKMC more, but I'm a fan of brilliant music and embrace stretching the genre of hip hop farther than the constraints its fans and practitioners love to put on it.

Why do you think GKMC is better than TPAB? Because it's more traditional? Familiar?

Kendrick's rapping and lyricism on GKMC is better. All the jazz experimentation in the world isn't gonna change that.

Oh wow i can finally post now

This album is a classic. Plain and simple. This IS the album of the year and most likely already one of the best albums of this decade.

I love it because it’s an intriguing listen. And I’m already picking out new themes and lines on each listen.

I didn’t think he wasn’t get gonna THIS raw ever again after TPAB. But he manage to go EVEN RARER and it’s just

My only gripes with the album was how there isn’t at least one TDE artist on this project since it was his last one with the label. Him and Dave Free (pgLang) really their own men now. Kinda disappointing to see cause I have a feeling TDE as a label is gonna suffer with his absence.

SZA is the next to go..

Also…Andre 3K should have been featured on “Crown.” Either a full rap or him harmonizing with Kendrick would have pushed this to another level. Especially with the subject matter, 3K could relate.


Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if he pulls a Frank Ocean and he drops another album at the end of the year where he is just fully spitting. No theme…just bars.

I also wouldn’t mind if he just goes on a feature run like Cole and goes scorched earth

He really did it again..he is forever certified as one of the greatest writers of all time. And I’m not saying that to be bias cause I’m mainly a Em Stan.

5 consistently classic albums back to back. Only person who ties him is Kanye..

Kodak fukking spazzed on silent hill. That song is one of my favorites along with die hard, n95, crown, and savior. Count me out and Purple Hearts were enjoyable and we cry together made me uncomfortable as fukk lmao. Mother I sober damn near made me cry I’m not gonna lie.

Overall this album was really good, the only songs I didn’t care for were worldwide steppers and auntie diaries. I would probably rank this after tpab, gkmc and s80, I enjoyed it more than damn tho. Some of the songs really sung home to me like crown and father time. My nikka kung fu Kenny dropped another dope album

Crown is an easy skip. I’m still shocked to see people giving this album a 5/5. Too many lows and even the majority of highs wouldn’t crack his top 25.

nikka please. U wanna test each others musical palette? I’m a fan of mad different genre’s of music not just rap. Which is why I’m not THAT impressed by TPAB like y’all are. nikka don’t got one song on that shyt better and more heartfelt than Sing About Me. And GKMC ain’t even my fav Kendrick album. Section 80 is. But I can acknowledge the impact GKMC made on the youth, hip hop world, and the public. It’s funny because before TPAB came out Kendrick fans was acting like GKMC was the deepest shyt in the world and even comparing it to Illmatic. Now nikkas in here damn near dismissing it. It goes to show how goofy people are when it comes to this nikka. Lol. I’m more a fan of GKMC because it sounds better. He raps better. He’s more concise with his message on that album as well. Kendrick is scatterbrained as fukk on TPAB and that’s cause he has no real stance on anything and he’s not really THAT type of conscious rapper. TPAB was a reactionary album based on the backlash he got from his Mike Brown comments and a few conversations he had with Cole. Who is far more sensible when it comes to that type of content.
