What happened then, and what's happening today are not one in the same. More and more non Jamaican artists are just outright strip mining dancehall right now, the fact that Ed Sheeran has the most popular "dancehall" song in the last 10 years is pretty sad and a direct result of Drake. That will prevent artists from breaking through because people will grow tired of the sound.

Disagree as Jamaicans themselves are the tastemakers. Whatever dubs are hot in Jamaica make it's way to the mainstream not the other way around. If that was the case Sean Paul would have been the death knell in Dancehall. In fact i have never considered Ed Sheeran's song dancehall and couldn't imagine any bashment DJ spinning that inna dance unless a yard artist had done their own dub over it.
