Everyone was going platinum back then who had a top ten hit. The fact that Milkshake was the number 3 song on the planet and the album bricked says it all about Kelis

93,000 the first week with a top ten single in 2003 is embarrassing. This ain’t 2022
no, everyone wasn't, rappers were but by that time singers were not. and please go check the star trak roster, all them nikkas was putting up bricks outside of robin thicke who took 3 singles before his project caught on. says a lot about the capabilities and reach of a label when they can't break anyone new

edit: go look at reception for tasty and then dangerously in love...again, kelis absolutely had impact, she didn't have the sales tho, partly due to her sound not fitting in one box. amerie is someone similar - dropped a cult classic without the sales to validate its impact/love.

lol @ an island "ting" when two years earlier Rih was looking like Beyonce lite and every other girl in the industry...but her island roots inspired the looks she switched to for her hair and fashion :dead:

:what: are you young? Kelis had next until she disappeared
She had two songs. That was not next. The two who had actually had next was Aaliyah or Beyonce, then Aaliyah died, and that left Beyonce with the crown. Aaliyah already had a classic by the time Kelis even debuted and Beyonce was kicking everyone back in on Destiny Child.

I'm reading this thread surprised people saying she had a "sound". It was her producer's sound. That's how she disappeared so easily. I'm not even a Beyonce fan that much, but y'all making Kelis into a bigger musical martyr than she actually is.

This has officially gone off the rails with people making up stories at this point. "Caught Out There" was not about Pharrell. Pharrell didn't have a relationship with Kelis outside of music. According to Kelis, The Neptunes HATED her. She spoke on that while still signed to Star Trak in 2004. Nas never made reference to Kelis and Pharrell and the line from "By Baby" was never directed at Pharrell, but all of Kelis's past partners.
This.

Dudes really say anything lol.

then maybe you should stop commenting, because as girls/women who were 16-25 back then, we absolutely paid attention to and took notice of kelis's style. her showing up like this

in Bossy had us stuck from the hair, to the glasses, to the bathing suit. you can look at cassie, monica, beyonce, rihanna, amerie, christina milian, ciara, ashanti, tierra marie, keyshia cole, olivia, and so on, all had the same long side part hair/weave, all of them were rocking basic ass fashion (tho bey had started changing once jay got her away from her mom's bamma designs) none of them wore editorial makeup or fashion and NONE of them chopped off their hair. you cannot look at rihanna in 07-09 vs her in 06 and not see kelis 06-08.

I don't know how anyone could conclude that Kelis had next. She made some great music with The Neptunes and even with other producers when she branched out on Kelis Was Here.

I don't know if I agree with Aaliyah having next either. She was 7 years removed from her debut and three albums deep by the time she passed. Pretty much had a full career by the time she died. Far from a new artist who would have next.

Kelis still had a sound though. She spent her career as a slept on talent.

my favorite album by kelis is Kelis was Here, and that was after she left neptunes, Tasty had a lot more producers than the neptunes, and yet on both she still had a "sound". and just because you have a producer you work with doesn't mean you as an artist don't decide your sound. part of kelis's failure as an artist is because she was eclectic, you could get punk/rock, pop, and soul from her on one album, that didn't work back then except for white artists :ld:

Some of yall just measuring her by sales, that's fine, but as a female who was still in the "impressionable" phase, Kelis was a whole style to us, that doesn't mean everyone loved her music (she was also inconsistent AF with singles), but in the same way women fukked with these Hot Girl and Savage moments (rih's savage, not meg's), we fukked with Milkshake/Bossy, there just was no social media to amplify it

Beyoncé nor the Neptunes really owe Kelis a thing…but with that said, Kelis was CRAZY influential on other artists. Y’all are looking at the impact on pop culture when other artists look to specific other artists for that. She could do any musical style and had an extremely unique image, those types of artist who don’t blow up are prime targets for being habitually bitten by others.

I dont for a second doubt though that Pharrell did some shady stuff with her. He reminds me too much of Russell Simmons with that peaceful zen image. Those ones be in the most stuff on the low low.
