this is 22 years ago around the time she first dropped...Kelis doesn't sound white, she sounds like the average artsy/creative kids at any school USA (black, white, or in between) - and definitely sounds like them arty kids from NY, where she's from. finally, if yall think she sounds white, cool, but that's her natural way of talking she's not emulating anyone...i'm really trying to understand what box yall trying to fit her in as needing to sound like?

@Rozay Oro is regurgitating racist stereotypes. Some black people associate speaking the “Kings English” with whiteness. We are not intelligent enough to pronounce words properly:skip:

And that interpolation wouldn’t be used without her making that track a hit :mjlol:

Kelis ain't hot, so they shyt on her.

rihanna pulled from her style a lot, not necessarily her sound...i know someone is gonna say it's just hair, but one, this was 08-10 rih pulling from stuff kelis did in 06-09 in an era when all the other women was rocking long weaves, and two, it was style of dress as well. when rih reinvented herself on GGGB, you could see a lot of Kelis Was Here era in her style. everything aint super documented from then since SM was poppin like that, but rih and bey jacking things from Kelis was a conversation for sure

Hot damn I didn’t know Kelis was getting copied by all these bytches until today. I shouldn’t be surprised though, there’s no one like Kelis and hasn’t been for awhile. She’s an original like Anita Baker and Toni Braxton. Most everyone out right now is a derivative of someone that came before.

No she is talking about the Manager! She meant the manager had writing credits but he had never written a song in his life. Not Pharrell.

The manager don't have writing credits though. Only writers credited on the singles on her first two albums are Pharrell and Chad. You can look it up on BMI or ASCAP. Maybe the manager finessed a cut of the publishing but that ain't a songwriting credit and she know that. So if I misinterpreted what she was trying to say, it's because she said something untrue. And that's the only reason I'm commenting, she out here just saying anything, that don't make it true.

If I'm wrong I'll admit it but there's no manager or anyone else listed as a songwriter for those tracks according to the official sources

The Neptunes are elite producers, but their track record with new artists is spotty at best. I can't think of a brand new artist who had a Neptunes track as the first single that didn't flop or get shelved. Clipse had their first album shelved and "The Funeral" was a banger as was that album. Kelis had a classic debut, but it flopped even with "Caught Out There" as a single. T.I. flopped with a Neptunes single. Robin Thicke's album from 2006 had a nice Neptunes jam and it too was flopping until "Lost Without You".
On what planet is Kelis album a classic debut :russ:

what new artist did the neptunes make wildly successful? the clipse first album no one knows, lord willin didn't go plat despite putting up a classic song like grindin, and their two joints after flopped, they bricked 3 times in a row with the neptunes as well. kelis and the clipse had a few big singles but mainly a cult following who fukked with them heavy. neptunes produced fire songs for hot/established acts, they never blew up a new artist...

secondly, that was an era draped in talent, plenty of talented artists remained b-list, everyone couldn't be a star.
Everyone was going platinum back then who had a top ten hit. The fact that Milkshake was the number 3 song on the planet and the album bricked says it all about Kelis

93,000 the first week with a top ten single in 2003 is embarrassing. This ain’t 2022
