I think that Pop might go ahead and call him out, which wouldn't be the worst decision, but even assuming that Kawhi doesn't make trouble and cause unrest in SA this year AND he plays, he's still an asset that they will get nothing for unless they make a trade. I also wouldn't make the assumption that Kawhi will just play out his year without being a general disruptor to try and convince Pop and Buford to change their minds and deal him. It's better to just get rid of him and get some good value that you can use to rebuild your team back for him.

Again, SA and LA both need each other in this very specific case, which is why I think a deal that looks something like what I earlier described will likely happen (and no, it doesn't necessarily have to involve Deng's contract, but I do think that asking the Spurs to take on that terrible deal along with two young core players and a pick or two isn't crazy or playing hardball).
