good flick. not GREAT, but i enjoyed it. thought it dragged a bit in some parts. felt very "by the numbers" as well.

of the oscar noms i've seen thus far, i'd definitey put it ahead of boyhood, american sniper, and EASILY ahead of birdman. i think i probly liked whiplash just a lil more though. overall i feel like this is a real weak year for best picture noms (although there are obviously a few movies left i still have to see)

that scene in the hospital with the father after his son was declared dead :mjcry:

almost makes me wish there was an oscar for best supporting actor for a single scene.:mjcry:

I saw the film last night for the first time. It's a good film; not a great film that is deserving of multiple awards. I thought the writing and dialogue was exceptional and the cinematography as well. I can say I was most appreciative that the writers honed in on a historic moment in time and put it into motion instead of polarizing Martin and other leaders in the work.

What I would love to see next is one of these writers make a film about Marcus Garvey and the Pan-african movement, or more films regarding black american life post slavery and pre-civil rights movements.

Fantastic Film. Yes it was clearly robbed for the Oscars it's pathetic. Love the direction, story, acting. LOL @ the "LBJ" controversy. A movie about "The Black Stuggle" and white people are focusing on the White Guy, typical. Everything I've read from Black people have said LBJ did help but wasn't "FAST" and that's the account. Now according to White America LBJ was the great White Savoir who did everything to get it passed. Anyways the fact White People used LBJ to give this movie a controversy shows you how even when a movie about Us and Done by us they have to focus on what the White Person did. GO SEE THIS MOVIE. The only thing I'm mad at is I think this should of been a true Martin Bio-Pic. It was about Selma at it's core but I felt it was trying to be MLK Bio-Pic at the same time too.

I disagree breh. I think it was that good because it wasn't a traditional biopic. It didn't fall into the tropes and the best way in my mind to do the biopic is the way they did it: focus on an event as opposed to running the gamut of someone's life.

And I said it before in the oscars thread but let's not lump all quite people together on this one; plenty of them have championed the film before the release and continued to champion it

Yeah but I wanted a "X" type of Bio-Pic for MLK. As for the LBJ thing, sorry but it's White People. Sure it's not "ALL" White People but it's White People that made it a controversy. I haven't really seen anyone but White People writing or commenting about the LBJ thing. Most Black People I talked to that saw it, LBJ didn't even come out their mouth cause it was so much bigger than him.

Well to be fair it;s LBJ's staff who made it a controversy and that's their right and their job; you protect your guy. However once those same guys came in and commented on oscar races, that's where I have the issue. If you want to speak up for his side then cool, you should, but the minute you end your op ed with "this is why it shouldn't be in an oscar race" or something to that effect, I cry foul. So that's not "white america" as much as its politicians doing what politicians do but even with that said, it's no excuse for the academy bungling it and I still wouldn't be surprised to see it win best picture.

And that X style would be cool but I think they did it the best way possible. X is one of a kind as a biopic that's legitimately good and doesn't feel cliche or stereotypical for what a biopic normally is.

It's not winning Best Picture after "12 year" won last year. The Academy's racial history proves they will never give a Black Casted film best picture two years in a row. Now Common and John Legend will probably win cause they can give two Black People an award in one. Also "Selma" is the 1st Historical Drama to be penelized for not so called "Following" History. "JFK" and "Nixon" both played loose with History and still got mutiple Oscar Nods. When it's "White" History it doesn't have to be perfect but "Black" history has to follow some "Documentary" style facts with movies, it's crazy.

I'll agree with the last part. Still not completely buying the first part of the statement but that's because I'm an optimist and I also know that the academy is incredibly reactive..they don't always stand for anything and like Mayor Quimby, they go with the wind. They don't like this negative PR they've been getting for a week and they hear it. From every trade paper in hollywood, to every site that covers movies to even big industry players (Lucas has spoke on it) and they'll either give it the best picture win OR just be incredibly diverse next year and overcompensate, possibly nominating stuff that doesn't deserve it just to say "hey we are diverse!"

Just watched it myself :wow: 5 out of 5 stars. Amazing movie. I can't even fathom what those brave men and women had to face :mjcry:. Nigeria we made it:blessed:. Both Martin and Coretta played by Nigerians :salute:. Great great film

Breh, we really gotta get Nollywood popping man. It has a long way to go, but if it can get the funding and support the shyt can be a damn powerhouse :wow:

And David played the HELL outta MLK :wow:
