I don't care so much that it got snubbed at whiteys awards after last year with 12 years we won't be seeing that sort of gushing for a black movie in a while especially not one that doesn't involve slavery. I am more saddened by the money it's amassed (or lack there of) at the box office.
It had a 20 Million budget. Black Historical Drama normally average between 40-75 Million tops. Here's how some other Black Historical Films did at the Box Office:
12 Years A Slave: 56 Domestic (American Audiences didn't turn out but it did an amazing 131 Million overseas to give it a 181 Million total off a 20 Million budget. This makes it the highest grossing black historical film worldwide)
Amistad: 44 Million Domestic (Even with Steven Spielberg Directing, it didn't get a worldwide release. The budget was 36 Million)
Malcolm X: 46 Million Domestic (Did not get a worldwide release and Spike had to ask for money to finish it. It ended up being a 30 Million budget)
The Color Purple: 92 Million Domestic (Got 11 Oscar Nods and lost all of them, it grossed another 50 million overseas for a 142 Million total)
Rosewood: 13 Million Domestic (This one bombed pretty bad, it had a 30 Million budget.)
Glory: 26 Domestic (Denzel won his 1st Oscar from this Civil War Epic but it did underperform. It had a 30 Million budget and wasn't released overaseas)
Ray: 75 Million Domestic (It also did another 50 Million overseas to give it a 125 Million worldwide total. It had a 40 Million budget)
Ali: 58 Million Total (It only added 29 Million Worldwide for a 87 Million total. It's the highest budget for a histoical black film ever at 107 Million so it did underperform)
The Butler: 116 Domestic (Plus it add another 60 Million worldwide for a 176 Million total. It only had 30 Million budget it's the highest grossing Black historical film ever Domestically)
Selma: 30 Million Domestic (Thus far, it only had a 20 Million budget)
What I gather from these numbers is Hollywood likes to Lie. They sit up here and say "Films with Black Cast Don't make money domestic or overseas" but when you look at the budgets they aren't spending money on Black casted films like that and some they aren't releasing overseas. Yet a majority of these films have surpassed their budgets by a lot.
