why? They get paid more and faster...and Jrod becoming a free agent at 34 is more attractive than 37/38 for the next deal.

If the Mariners are doing this, it means it's cheaper for them to do so. Boras ain't cutting anyone a discount.

Also of the max on this deal is something like 450 million that sets the top bar on future contract. And that's low if we looking 10 years down the road. I'm reading he needs 3 MVPs to hit the top escalator. A 3 time MVP in his prime in 2032 is going to command a much higher average salary than what he would be paid.

I wouldn't give that type of contract to a pitcher because arms can explode at a moment's notice, but a position player? I think there's way less risk that's more in line with paying a basketball player. Injury-based regression is the biggest threat in all cases, but pitchers are especially prone to it more than position players/NBA players.
There's so few position players that maintain an elite level of play though. Think of the contract Cody Bellinger would have been offered if it was based off his rookie year. Or Kris Bryant. JRod's basically having the same season Randy Arozarena had last year for the Rays. Does anyone think he should be getting a deal worth up to $470 million?

shyt, the Tatis deal might already be a disaster. Crashed a motorcycle plus got caught juicing. The only guy from the last decade who's brought it every season is Trout.

Yelich looked like Barry Bonds a few years ago. Remember when Matt Kemp looked like a Triple Crown threat? The list goes on and on.

I initially thought this was an insane offer based on the headline but the contract details are pretty interesting.

I still think it's a bad deal though. Baseball players are just too volatile to commit this much term and money after half a season. It isn't like basketball where once a guy hits 20-25 PPG, you can count on that for a long time barring injury.

I'm gonna be old as fukk by the end of this deal. :picard: :to:
Damn, I'll be old too. All my kids would be obviously grown

Yelich's back is bad. Derrick Rose blew out his ACL and became a good, but not elite player, much like Yelich did after his back went.

I can go through and pick out NBA players who had the same issues. Grant Hill. Brandon Roy. Etc. Etc.

As for Arozarena, who is a nice player, the core of this Julio deal is 14/210, basically, with escalators that can take it to 470M. Randy Arozarena was 26 and not 21 when he had this type of year, so you'd never offer him that, but if the Rays offered him 7/105 (half of the J-Rod deal sans escalators), no one is batting an eye at that.

And if San Diego wants to give up on Tatis at 23, please send him to Seattle. Your brain doesn't settle until 25. Let's see how and if he matures before worrying about whether or not he'll eventually live up to that contract.

i hear you, but if you're Julio's agent he is getting paid $700m now and he is locked up getting at least $210mm and up to $450mm, and you represent him during that time.

Yeah, its a favorable deal for the Ms, but its also very favorable for JRod if he performs especially. I rarely choose short money over long money but the difference in this case is worth taking it for all parties imo

Mariners got a steal. Same way Padres did with Tatis.

Why are these agents getting their clients to basically sign away their prime years with these 13+ year deals?

Soto and his agency is the only one that’s done it right
considering the probablity of getting injured this might be the way if its over 200 mil. the braves robbed all their guys

big risk for both sides but I’d say it’s worth a shot especially with the opt out in 2028

Evan Longoria, Joe Mauer, Jason Heyward, Yasiel Puig, Wil Myers, Carlos Correa, Vlad Jr., Bo Bichette, etc.

Tatis just got caught juicing. He has a TON of pressure to produce when he returns.

There's WAY more variance with MLB players than NBA. You can pick a few outliers who got injured early and wrecked their careers but the majority of guys who hit, consistently produce for a decade at a high level. Not a lot of guys do that in baseball.
