This is like marrying your girl after a month of dating but hey, good luck to the Mariners and hope J-Rod keeps it up.

Mariners fans have had a run in the past 30+ years as far as franchise cornerstones go.

Mariners got a steal. Same way Padres did with Tatis.

Why are these agents getting their clients to basically sign away their prime years with these 13+ year deals?

Soto and his agency is the only one that’s done it right
sets up a young player with generational money right away. its a gamble for both sides for sure. for Julio he should have tried to just do a 10yr. I always liked the Mariners tho since King Felix so im happy for them

Felix Hernandez and Edgar Martinez too. They'll have some legends wearing their hat in the HOF soon. Griffey and edgar are in. Ichiro, felix, next

It's a huge risk to give rookies such a long commitment. I understand why certain teams practice it, but it's not my money.....

They're probably pricing in 'face of the franchise' which he is.

All i know is they better break off Mitch Haniger because the Ms got a core and I'd rather it not be broken up.
Mitch is 32 in the offseason, though.

Though I will say that since Kelenic is a bum, they probably should try to keep Haniger for another couple of years. They need to spend the bulk of their cash on a middle infielder this offseason more than anything.

I initially thought this was an insane offer based on the headline but the contract details are pretty interesting.

The deal, which is expected to be announced soon, offers a number of iterations, sources said. The base deal is for $120 million and lasts through the 2029 season. Following the 2028 season, the Mariners can exercise an option for an additional eight years or 10 years, depending on where Rodriguez finishes in MVP voting in the preceding years.

If the Mariners turn down the option, Rodriguez can exercise a five-year, $90 million player option after the 2029 season or hit free agency just shy of his 30th birthday.

The Mariners' option is where the potential money can grow into a historically large figure. If Rodriguez maxes out his MVP escalators, Seattle's option would be for 10 years and $350 million, taking the total value of the deal to $470 million through 2039. The lowest-level would be for eight years and $200 million and would keep Rodriguez tied to the Mariners through 2037.

I still think it's a bad deal though. Baseball players are just too volatile to commit this much term and money after half a season. It isn't like basketball where once a guy hits 20-25 PPG, you can count on that for a long time barring injury.

I'm gonna be old as fukk by the end of this deal. :picard: :to:

I wouldn't give that type of contract to a pitcher because arms can explode at a moment's notice, but a position player? I think there's way less risk that's more in line with paying a basketball player. Injury-based regression is the biggest threat in all cases, but pitchers are especially prone to it more than position players/NBA players.
