John Carter kicked off science fiction. Learned a lot about the birth of science fiction in a class I took in college (which was about science technology and literature.....basically white people writing literary works to justify or portray racism from a scientific perspective in their eyes).
JC was the inspiration for Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon years later (characters that became WAY more popular than JC who birthed them basically)
If you didn't know about the literary works of JC, then yeah you'd be like what kind of basic shyt is this.

It didn't suck but it was marketed badly and that's something Disney rarely does. In a vacuum, all hype aside, it was an ok movie.
