They made the sequel trilogy up movie by movie as they went along so when he signed on he had no idea where it was going. Do you as an up and coming actor really just walk away from a role like that after you signed the contract? You’re kinda stuck. Not everyone likes the direction of their character.
For all we know Finn could have been force sensitive and become a Jedi in movie 2 or 3 from the first one. Of course it didn’t turn out that way and his character just obsessed over Rey for 3 movies but it didn’t have to be that way.

These SW films (some of them) are fun. They aren't smart, they aren't progressive.
They're literally dumb and childish and that accounts for 99% of their success.
