Commercial success isn’t solely defined by album sales these days. It’s damn near the least relevant metric

They’re touring well for the level and type fans they have.

Most female rap fans are young black women. That leads to doing club walkthroughs and college campuses and very small city venues

There’s no wave because streaming has siloed all listeners

What’s the point or copying Rod Waves sound when a lot of rap fans can’t even name a Rod Wave song even though he’s one of the hottest rappers out

I know this not you making this argument lol. Years of posts about sales and tour metrics that certain other artists need to meet or else they're failures, now you moving goal posts to defend a collection of women rappers who don't even have fans. They have attention. They can't tour, besides the minor shyt you mentioned. They can't even fill up a House Of Blues venue or medium sized amphitheater despite having radio hits. They don't sell records/stream. Just about all of their albums flop. Their singles are propped up by obvious samples that kill their publishing. Many of them can't write a song to save their life, meaning the label is paying people to write. And they require more maintenance on the road (makeup artist, stylist, etc). As I said earlier, labels are spending pop money on artists who don't generate pop money (revenue).

The game has changed. It’s damn near impossible for a new artist to build the type of fanbase required to tour and sell records with the way music is consumed these days. Especially female rappers who have always played at a disadvantage

Even with that these girls are successful

And yet the artists who have done it, like Rod Wave, get categorically dismissed by you. I am not a Rod Wave fan btw, my point is simply that our entire concept of success is tilted now. Coi doesn't sell records, all her hits have major samples (IE she's not getting paid), and can't tour to save her life yet she is "successful" in your eyes. This is a chick who is basically broke, mind you. Same with Latto.

We should tell the truth. These chicks are discovered, molded and planted by dudes who sell them to record labels. The labels craft sample heavy trap pop hits for them that stream well. They flood the artists on radio, college appearances and clubs while getting them ad promo deals. And then the gimmick gets stale after a couple years and they fade into "IG personality with the occasional song" territory. There is no artistic drive, no focus on getting better, no focus on building a fan base. It's just about exploiting the attention long enough to get as many bags as possible. But the bags aren't big due to the hands in their pockets, and most of these chicks end up broke but glamorous.

Rod wave has been out since 2017.

You can say he started his mainstream peak in 2020 if you want to

I just don’t think you’re acknowledging how difficult it is for female rappers

I won't acknowledge it because they have more advantages and resources in this era, plus the dominant demographic is conditioned to fukk with them. The laziness you see is a direct result of them not being real artists.

There's a difference between thot rappers and female emcees

Lil Kim was the originator of thot rappers. Adding sexual undertones and feminine vibes to hip-hop beats. Apparently, her best work was written by Big.

Then she came with her hardest verse

Most thot rappers realize sex sells. A female rapper that shows sexuality gets marketed heavily by the industry. The only female emcees who didn't have to sell sex to blow up were Missy (the GOAT female entertainer), Mia X, Remy, Lady of Rage, Rah Digga, Mc Lyte, Roxanne Shante, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill (she's more of a hybrid) and Eve

Then you have modern female emcees such as Little Simz, Jean Grae, ,Rapsody, Moor Mother, 7xvethegenius, Armani Caesar, Noname, Saroc and Che Noir

Huge numbers. Records sales are not a measurement for who’s the wave with new rappers
